How to tell if my dog's skin bump is a rash or mosquito bite?

Most often when we see a lesion like this on the skin it is the result of an insect bite, in particular a biting fly such as a black fly. If your dog is acting normally then I would just monitor the area. If the lesion grows in size, becomes raised or oozes a discharge, or your dog develops many more lesions, becomes lethargic or very itchy a vet exam is recommended.

Based on the photos and your description, I suspect what you are seeing may be due to insect bites such as ants. If this is just inflammation from insect bites and not an infection, it will likely clear up on its own. I would recommend using a product such as Malacetic Conditioning spray which can be found online quite easily or a steroid spray from PetCo and apply to the area twice daily until resolved. If pustules begin to form or the rash spreads / worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Bentley so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would continue to monitor it for the next 48 hours. If it does not improve or it worsens, have Jules evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. You could consider using K9 Advantix II for mosquito bite prevention. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

External parasite and bug bites can definitely create lesions like this on dogs. Ticks, fleas, spiders, ants, bees, etc could all cause something like this. But having said that, this could just be a pus filled pimple that we call a pustule. This is caused by a staph bacteria that lives on the surface of the skin. It is non contagious to other pets and people. I don't think any additional medicines will be required but monitor the area closely for resolution. Some insect bites can cause a lot of local damage around the bite wound if that's what this is. If this worsens, spreads, or persists, have your veterinarian look at it and advise you. Good luck with Ranger. Hopefully this will just resolve on it's own despite the cause.

It is possible, though it looks more like it could be a bacterial infection. Ideally, take her in to the vet for an exam so that the proper treatment can be determined. Hi and thanks for your post. It is hard to say exactly what the cause of Blitz's rash may be due to without examining Buster first, but I can offer some possibilities and next steps. Some possibilities may include a fungal infection, bacterial infection, mites, a food or environmental allergy. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a fungal culture, skin scraping, and/or an allergy screening.
