My 10-year-old dog is sick for a week and getting worse. What's wrong?

What's wrong with my dog? It started about a week ago. He always get excited going out of the house unattended. Although, this is the first time in ages that he was sick. I suspect he was poisoned or sniff something bad. My mother is selfish about this. She would not let me check my dog to the nearest veterinarian. We let him take biogesic for his runny nose. But i think things got worse. I'm afraid to lose him now. He has been with us a 10 years. I would like you to help me as soon as possible!

Since Shadow is not acting like his normal self I would be concerned that there is something going on medically with him. They symptoms you are describing are very vague and could indicate several different things going on.

Based on Shadow's age I would be concerned about a metabolic or internal issue such as kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes. Unfortunately the only way to know if he has these diseases is to have your veterinarian run some blood work.

In the meantime, while you are trying to convince your mom to take him to the vet, try to keep him as calm and comfortable at home as possible. I would avoid letting him go outside alone unattended if you can. If his appetite is decreasing try feeding him some plain boiled chicken and rice.

If you can, post another question or request a consult so we can better understand what symptoms Shadow is exhibiting. This may help me to better figure out what is going on.

Seeing that Booboo is 12 years old, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to make sure that there are no major changes to his blood that would indicate why he is exhibiting these symptoms. He may be shivering and whimpering because of discomfort. The vomiting could be due to systemic illness or infection. The sooner he is seen by a veterinarian the better. Why is my healthy dog suddenly not running? What should I do?

Poor Shadow! I recommend taking him back into the vet for further testing. It's interesting and certainly not normal that a young dog doesn't want to or seems unable to run. A physical exam isn't enough to rule things out, so I recommend further testing such as x-rays of his back, hips, and hind limbs, and possibly x-rays of his chest. It could be a musculoskeletal problem preventing him from running, or it could be something wrong with his heart. The x-ray of his chest will visualize his heart and lungs. Blood work would be a good idea as well. Depending on the results of these tests, the vet may recommend further testing such as an echocardiogram if they suspect something wrong with his heart, or may be able to have a diagnosis and can discuss treatment options with you. I recommend taking him into a vet again this week. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Why is my old dog suddenly sick, weak, not eating, and leaking fluid?

Any continued abnormal symptoms (longer than 24 hours) warrants a vet exam. I cannot tell you what is wrong with her just by your description. There are many different things that could be causing her symptoms. Those symptoms are very vague and could be caused by any illness or disease process. I can tell you that you need to be diligent getting weird symptoms checked out especially with an older dog. Please get her a vet exam as soon as you can. They may recommend running some lab tests and/or x-rays.

My dog's sad, not eating, running away since I left. What's wrong?

If he's never been away from you, it may be that he is having some anxiety with you being gone that may be contributing. However, it could be something more serious. Since he's acting lethargic and is not eating, talk to your mum ( I assume this is who is caring for him currently?) and see if she can get him in to see a vet in the next few days. Why is my 14-year-old dog not eating, losing weight, and slowing down?

I would definitely recommend some blood work, if this hasn't been done recently. Older dogs are prone to a number of health issues that can cause decreased appetite along with being less active - chronic kidney disease and hypothyroidism are two possibilities that are both very common. In many cases, these issues are treatable (at least to some extent) once a diagnosis is made, so it's well worth checking for them if you can - hopefully, there are some things you can do to make him feel better for as long as possible, even though he's getting older.

Why is my 10-year-old dog shaking, struggling to walk, and not eating?

Poor guy. He certainly sounds like he may either be in pain or has some underyling neurological disorder going on here. Your vet should know where to start looking once a complete physical examination is done, because much more information can be gathered here. They will certainly want to start with some baseline bloodwork and possibly some x-rays if he seems to have any musculoskeletal issues as well. Some possible causes for these symptoms would be an underlying neurological disorder (i.e. IVDD), Addison's disease (disease of the adrenal gland), a toxin ingestion, or just pain from something internal.
