Can my dog get sick from eating dry dog food past its use by date?

The dog food may be "fresh" and palatable, but it will have lost some aroma and definitely a lot of the vitamins. Usually Vitamins stay actively working for about 6 months, so if you have a bag that has been opened for longer than 6 months the quality of the food is less than when it was originally opened. You can feed the food, but realize, that its nutritional value may be lower than when the bag was opened. If the manufacturer tells you that after 18 months the food was as good as when it originally was opened, you want to see the respective research proving that. In my professional opinion: the faster you use up the food after opening, the better.

While it's not ideal for your dog to eat canned food that has been sitting out for this long, in my experience it's not likely to cause any serious problems - dogs have very acidic stomach acid, which gives them a greater tolerance for eating rotten or spoiled things. It's possible that Dayz may have an upset stomach (vomiting or diarrhea) from this, but unless the food was visibly moldy, I would not expect her to have any other serious problems. If she has vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours, it would be best to have her examined by a vet to make sure that nothing more serious is wrong.

It can be difficult to recognize when food has spoiled, and there have been many food recalls lately for various problems like salmonella or other contaminants in food that could make your dog sick but wouldn’t be obviously detectable in the food. I would recommend sticking to foods that are produced by manufacturers with good quality control in place like Hill’s, Purina and Royal Canin. In general you should keep food at room temperature or a cool, dry place in a tightly sealed metal container or you can place the original bag in a plastic container. Make sure you buy a bag that your dog can eat in 4-6 weeks or the oils could become rancid.

Do not use shampoo that is expired or very old. Over the years the components could have gone through a chemical reaction and change which now may be detrimental to your dogs hair and skin. I suggest you throw this shampoo away and get some fresh dog shampoo.

Hello. Dog kibble has organic compounds like fats, just like any other perishable food might have. Generally, if a kibble is not used within a month , it is a good idea to put the remainder in the fridge or freezer to prevent the breakdown & loss of essential vitamins & nutrients & rancidity of the fatty acids. As long as the original package seal is not broken, a food might remain relatively fresh for months, but once opened, it is good to try & use the entire contents within 4-6 weeks.
