My puppy's shoulder looks malformed. What could be the problem here?

You will need to take your puppy to an orthopedic surgeon for assessment. Your puppy needs to be x-rayed. Once the orthopedic surgeon sees the build of the hips and hind legs he will be able to tell you whether this may need surgery, bandaging or other ways to improve or if there is no way to fix this. He will also need to do a neurological exam to make sure your puppy can actually move the legs. Should the condition not be improvable,then your puppy could get a wheelchair for the hindlegs and so live a happy life.

Without seeing him myself my first thought is that he has carpus valgus which is a congenital abnormality that cannot be fixed. If you really want to know if there is anything you can do you would need to take him to an orthopedic specialist for a consultation. Bone deformities are not an unusual problem for this breed. It could be that he has elbow dysplasia and depending on the severity there may be a surgery that could help him. I strongly suggest you get him to a specialist for an exam and x-rays. Congratulations on your new puppies. As you were describing how one of them was walking, I began to think that either there has been trauma to that specific leg either buy mom accidentally rolling over on the puppy, etc. or there may even be a genetic growth disorder that is affecting the specific puppy. Actally there is still that a lot that can be done for pets this young in terms of veterinary care. Perhaps a small splint can be applied or maybe there is a nutritional deficiency that is causing this leg abnormality that can be corrected by proper supplementation. Nevertheless, I urge you to take the affected puppy to the veterinarian as soon as possible to have a complete orthopedic examination performed. I would also take another one of the puppies as well as the mother just in case they need to do some testing on them also to see if there are any linking causes. Good luck. Oh my goodness, Honey is so cute! What an adorable puppy! I recommend having her seen by a vet for this problem and to have x-rays done on that leg. It could be there was a disruption to the growth plate of her radius or ulna causing one of those bones to stop growing while the other continues to grown and causes the deformity you are seeing. This can be corrected surgically, which is why I recommend having her seen by a vet. With the x-rays, the vet can determine what is causing the deformity and can discuss surgical options with you. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I know you say Boosie's shape shows best in this photo but it is not easy to evaluate him from it due to the angle. Without feeling him myself and just seeing him standing/walking normally it is difficult to say. I does look to me like his stifle (knee) area is thick in this photo but it could just be the way he is laying.... I do think you should take him in for a veterinary exam. If nothing else, he should be due for his 2nd round of vaccines anyway so this is a good time to do the exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

I suspect this is a congenital abnormality. I recommend to get Ares examined by the veterinarian. With puppies, sometimes there are treatments available since they are still developing but sometimes there are not any options. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This sounds like a growth deformity, xrays would help to define exactly what is going on. Mineral, especially calcium and phosphorus imbalances can have a major influence at this age - converting his diet completely to a large breed puppy food may help to encourage optimal bone formation
