I just got a new dog with no vaccine records. What shots does he need?

Yes, you need to take Dandy to a vet and let them know that you just got him but did not receive any vaccine records. . They will get him started on his vaccines and likely give him a deworming. They will talk to you about what else he may need like heart worm prevention, flea/tick prevention, etc depending on what is prevalent in your area. I would try to get as much information from the previous owner as possible. If they don’t have any records maybe they remember the name of the veterinarian they took him to and you can call for that information? If you can not get any vaccination documents then I would be much more inclined to vaccinate him again rather than risk no vaccinations. Your dog will need several vaccines. Most veterinarians give a yearly combo vaccine that includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Corona (DHPPC). He will also need his Rabies vaccine. Rabies can now be given every three years after the initial 1 year vaccine. Other vaccines that I recommend are Canine Bordetella vacine (kennel cough) that is given every 6 or 12 months, and a Leptospirosis vaccine (this vaccine can be added to the combo vaccine or given alone). If your veterinarian offers a Lymes disease vaccine (probably means lymes is prevelant in your area), it would be a good idea to get that one as well. At that age your puppy would have had only one course of vaccinations. As they did not give you paper work I would assume that your puppy was not vaccinated and start with the first course again. You should take Koko to your vet for a wellness exam, worming and vaccinations. She will need three courses of vaccinations to be protected.

You can have your friend contact the vet they took Bella to for her vaccines, and get copies that way. If they won't do that, it would be safe to assume they didn't get her vaccines. In this case, you will have to take her into a vet to start her vaccines schedule. I hope this helps!

If you don't have proof of vaccination, then I would just assume that Ruby is not vaccinated, and get her started right away. Since she is already 5 months old, she will likely only need 2 distemper/parvo vaccinations in addition to rabies to get her up date.
