My new dog has no vaccine history. Can I get him shots and a checkup?

I inherited a dog and have no information on the vaccine history. He is a friendly pit bull that hasn’t been fixed. Would I be able to bring him here for a check up and vaccines?

Yes you can bring him to a VetCo clinic for vaccinations, a check up and microchipping if you like. Here is a list of prices and locations:

You may also try to find out which vet the former owner used. The vet should have a health record of the dog.

As long as he's in good health you can bring him to the VetCo clinic at your local PetCo. They do the physical examination for free and they can update his vaccinations and test him for parasites and heartworms. They also will deworm him and they sell heartworm and flea and tick prevention medications there. If you want a microchip they can check to see if he has one and implant one if you want. If he has a medical problem you would need to take him to a full service veterinarian. It's ok to boost the vaccinations even if it's not the correct time. Congratulations on your new addition! He is adorable! You did not mention where you got him or how old he is. If you got him from a private home, they may be able to tell you what vet they took him to previously, so you can find out his medical history. If you got him from a shelter, they may only have the medical history and vaccination history that they gave you. If you are unable to get any medical history of vaccination, that's OK. Your vet can examine him to give him a clean bill of health, then go over with you which vaccinations are appropriate for him and give them. Even if he has previously had the vaccinations, it is better to repeat them or give them early if we don't know his history to make sure that he is protected.

Discuss with your vet whether he needs the full course (at his age two vaccinations 3-4 weeks apart and then a booster 1 year later) or just one booster. Adopted dog, no vet records. Can I get them or re-vaccinate my puppy?

In most cases, you'll need owner permission in order for records to be transferred over, so while you can contact the vet, you may not be able to obtain full records. That said, they may at least be able to confirm neuter/vaccine status for you so you can let your vet know. If you can't get any records, you can also have your current vet perform a titer test to see where Wooly's immunity levels are, and then booster vaccines from there.

Yes, you need to take Dandy to a vet and let them know that you just got him but did not receive any vaccine records. . They will get him started on his vaccines and likely give him a deworming. They will talk to you about what else he may need like heart worm prevention, flea/tick prevention, etc depending on what is prevalent in your area. It is best to get him established with a vet anyway in case of any problems that may arise or emergency situations. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

I just got a new dog with no vaccine records. What shots does he need?

Ask the previous owner for the name of the veterinary practice where your dog was vaccinated. The practice should have the details and then can tell you which vaccines are due when. If he cannot tell you, then you should assume the dog never got any vaccinations. It would then be best to take him to a vet and start a course of core vaccines (basic immunizations(distemper/parvo, etc., at least 2 courses three weeks apart) as well as a rabies vaccination and a basic health check to make sure Coby is healthy.

New 13-month puppy, no shot records. Can a vet check his vaccines?

I would suspect Reese hasn't had his vaccines, and vets do not recognize home given vaccines as well. I would take him into a clinic to start his vaccine schedule. In addition, if he's 13 months, he should have had his rabies vaccines long ago, and that cannot be given at home. That can only be given by a vet, and there would be a record of it. Rabies is required by law. I hope this helps.
