My dog shivers and pants when traveling. What helps her anxiety?

I would recommend trying NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin. Usually with time and training, your puppy will get used to car rides and won't be so worried in new and different situations. There are a few things you can try to help him. A Thundershirt is a specially designed harness that hugs them tight and calms them down. Adaptil is a calming pheromone for dogs and you can buy an Adaptil collar so they are constantly being exposed to it. Some dogs are afraid of riding in cars, while others can get motion sickness and so they feel anxious in the car because they are nauseous. If you are concerned that Leo might be getting motion sickness in the car, you should visit your family veterinarian for an exam and to discuss possible medication to treat motion sickness.

Melanonin does not have sedating properties, so it will not help with anxiety. There are a number of natural supplements that may help with travel anxiety. You might consider VetriScience Composure. There was recently a study that revealed that a significant number of cases of what we thought was anxiety in the car may actually be nausea and the clinical signs resolved with anti-nausea medication given before car rides. So, it would be worth discussing anti-nausea options with your vet. There is a prescription medication called Cerenia that works very well, but there are also some other options. If that doesn't help, then I would discuss anti-anxiety medications with your veterinarian to help break the cycle of her anxiety. Finally, some dogs will pant and shake from excitement, so that would also be an option. It might take some trial and error, but hopefully you can get Keesha back to enjoying her car rides. VetriScience Composure chews or liquid daily for at least a few days prior to your trip is effective in noticeably calming many patients. If you find that the Composure is not sufficiently relaxed with just Composure, I would schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure that Rexy is up to date on vaccines and flea/tick/heart worm prevention and to inquire about a sedative such as trazadone or prescription Xanax that your vet may be comfortable with for Rexy. Hi there. You could try an over-the-counter natural calming supplement like Zykene or Composure prior to the trip, along with an Adaptil pheromone collar. Neither of these products should cause any significant drowsiness, and both are very safe.

There are medications you can get from your vet that help dogs with anxiety due to travel. Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give them. You can also get them thunder shirts, which have been reported to help dogs with travel anxiety. Without knowing exactly what type of travel they will be doing (i.e. plane, car), I can't give more specific advice, but I would call your vet today to discuss the use of medications for your dogs, and you can order thunder shirts online.
