My Shih Tzu ate a BBQ wing. Will he get diarrhea or constipation?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Constipation is an extreme form of constipation. This occurs when the dog is not able to pass any feces at all. Based on your description, this does not currently seem to be his problem. However, you do not want this to occur. Feeding more moisture such as canned food or warm water over the dry kibble can help to soften stool. You can try a low dose of his lactulose, but beware that it can cause diarrhea. Chicken wings with bones can cause gastritis or irritation of the stomach, and occasionally the bones can become lodged in the esophagus, stomach or intestines and cause an obstruction. Often a wing will be digested and the dog will have no problems whatsoever. As long as Chewy is otherwise healthy with no history of medical problems I think you can monitor him for vomiting, diarrhea or a decrease in appetite over the next few days.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That could have resulted in an obstruction which is now causing inappetence. Another possibility is of course dietary indiscretion. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This is likely going to require some bloodwork and abdominal imaging such as radiographs or ultrasound. If an obstruction is noted, further therapy may be needed. Good luck and have a great day!

You can change his food to boiled chicken and rice as this is very bland. You can also get probiotics from any pet store to start. If he starts vomiting or has a decrease in appetite, or starts with bloody diarrhea, then he needs to be seen by your vet. If it continues past 48 hours with no improvement, then I would get him checked also

His stool size should get back to normal soon. If you see your vet tomorrow, please make sure that he/she fully examines Romeo to ensure everything is OK.

This is a fairly common problem, unfortunately - dogs are good at getting into things that they shouldn't eat! I would expect that Charlie may have some mild GI upset for the next day or two (mild vomiting or diarrhea) - as long as he's active and eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't necessarily worry. There is a small chance that the bones could cause a blockage or an intestinal perforation - this is not common in my experience, but something to watch out for. Some dogs may also get serious illnesses like pancreatitis as a result of eating greasy "people food" like chicken wings. I would monitor Charlie closely for the next 24-48 hours - if he stops eating, has repeated episodes of vomiting, or diarrhea with blood in it then I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away in case of a serious problem.

Hello! I wouldn’t be too worried about lily at this point. if she is otherwise feeling good, I might try her on a very bland diet for a few days. An example of a bland diet would be boiled skinless chicken breast and steamed white rice (1 part chicken to 2-3 parts rice). If the diarrhea is persisting or if her appetite decreases or if she begins vomiting then I would have her veterinarian evaluate her. It would be a good idea to bring a sample of her stool in if the diarrhea continues so her vet can screen for intestinal parasites. I hope lily is back to herself very soon!
