My dog poops less after Trazodone. Is this normal or constipation?

I am afraid, this could indeed be a side effect of Trazodone. The manufacturer lists the following possible side effectsÆ Trazodone Side Effects in Dogs Lethargy, Sedation, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Panting, Hyperactivity, Shaking, Restlessness. I suggest you contact your vet and ask about dosage adjustment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Constipation is an extreme form of constipation. This occurs when the dog is not able to pass any feces at all. Based on your description, this does not currently seem to be his problem. However, you do not want this to occur. Feeding more moisture such as canned food or warm water over the dry kibble can help to soften stool. You can try a low dose of his lactulose, but beware that it can cause diarrhea. I wouldn't be too worried about it as he's otherwise normal. I would take him for a couple of walks a day, as this can stimulate pooping, and make sure he drinks plenty of water. I hope this helps!

If he's eating less fiber/volume or has had a change in diet while healing, it can be normal to see a reduction (or increase) in stool size, volume, or frequency. As long as he seems to be going normally when he does go, and doesn't seem in distress, I would just keep an eye on him. If the stool becomes bloody, is frequently diarrhea, Romeo has a sore or tender abdomen, or he seems to be having other symptoms in addition, a recheck with your vet is best.

If Romeo has had recent excessive stool production, it may be normal to have less for a day or two. It's fine for a dog to go a day without pooping, especially with that history. If he begins to strain unproductively, become painful, uninterested in food, or vomiting, contact your veterinarian.
