My 8-month-old pug sheds a lot. What food or supplements help?

Hello. As long as the shedding is even, not big patches resulting from excessive chewing or scratching, then it is probably normal. My pit seems to shed through July. Fish oil is an excellent idea. If she is healthy otherwise, try transitioning her to a puppy diet or high performance diet. Once she is at an appropriate weight, transition to a maintenance adult diet. A vitamin supplement, such at Pet-Tabs, can be used but as long as she is on a quality diet, she shouldn't need vitamin supplements. A fish oil supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, can be used to promote healthy skin and coat. Use a monthly flea and tick preventative as well as a monthly parasite preventative. If her condition does not improve in the next month or two, have her rechecked by your veterinarian.

The hair loss on Coco’s face is very suspicious for mites or ringworm (which humans can get as well). Less likely would be food allergies. Secondary bacterial infections are common with all these conditions. I recommend to have her see her veterinarian who may preform a skin scrape to check for mites. Treatment for mites varies. She will likely get medication for the bacterial as well. If she seems itchy, she should wear and Elizabethan collar to protect the area and try not to let her run it. Excessive shedding can have a multitude of reasons: It could be seasonal shedding as we are now in full-blown autumn and Sam may be shedding his coat and replacing it with a winter coat. He could also have a thyroid condition that is making him shed excessively. This can be diagnosed or ruled out easily via a blood test. Other reasons could be bad quality food, a lack of essential fatty acids, parasites or fungal/bacterial infections. Some dogs naturally shed more than others. If you think that the shedding is caused by something other than a seasonal change or fur I suggest you take Sam to your veterinarian for an exam. I am afraid there are no pills or vitamins to prevent excessive shedding. Brushing and feeding a good brand complete dog food for small dogs is the best treatment. Regular grooming (shaving) also will hep.

This sounds like normal shedding. I would not be worried unless there are bald spots where all the hair is missing. There is nothing available to stop shedding as it is a normal process. If Allie has dry skin, it may be causing her to itch more. Sometimes when dogs itch more often, they can shed more hair than normal. Make sure she does not have any red/pink skin discoloration or scabby lesions on her skin. If you see these, she may need antibiotics from a veterinarian to help her from being itchy. If she does not have skin lesions but does have dry/flaky skin, an omega 3 fatty acid/fish oil supplement taken orally should help resolve her dry skin issue. You can find several different brands for dogs online or at pet stores/vet clinics. There are several dog food brands that are high in omega 3 fatty acids. Look for a dog food that contains salmon. Another option to decrease the amount of dog hair in your house would be to have a groomer give Allie a "lion cut".
