Why isn't my Shar Pei shedding? Is it normal or a health issue?

I am assuming that you mean Shar-Pei rather than "sharp eagle" and that your mixed breed dog has Shar-Pei characteristics. If this is indeed the case, then these changes are quite normal. Shar-Pei's grow their adult coat at around 8 months. During this process they will go through a heavy shed of their puppy coat, sometimes even developing bald spots (temporarily). Changes in coat color or markings are also common when the adult coat grows in. If you are in fact asking about a bird, please repost your question with more details about what you are seeing.

As long as Peter doesn't have bald spots, excessive itching, or other signs of an underlying skin problem, this sounds like normal shedding for a double-coated breed :) These breeds shed an enormous amount of hair in the spring and early summer to prepare for the warmer weather. Having him bathed and blown dry with a forced air dryer should help remove a lot of the loose or dead undercoat to cut down on the shedding for the next few weeks, so you could schedule this with a groomer if you want to.

Shedding fur, even seemingly large amounts, is completely normal for most dogs. If your dog has never shed like this in the past, or if she is losing so much fur she is having bald patches, then I would be concerned. Poor hair growth and cost condition can be due to poor nutrition/diet or an underlying medical condition like hypothyroidism. If you feel like the amount Soska is shedding is abnormal I would recommend a visit to your veterinarian to have her examined and possibly to have blood work performed. In the meantime you can supplement her diet with some fish oil (specifically omega 3 fatty acids) and see if that helps her coat. I hope this helps. That looks like Chester's undercoat. This is a normal second layer of hair and some dogs have. Nothing to worry about! You may notice some times of year when he's shedding like crazy when the undercoat falls out and is replaced. Enjoy your beautiful pup! This is common time of year for dogs to "blow their coat" as a new type of hair comes it. This can also happen when switching from a puppy to adult coat. Unless you're seeing bald patches or he's itching, I wouldn't worry about the shedding. As far as the urinating, that does have me more concerned and I'd recommend a vet visit to rule out a medical problem and then restarting house training if no medical problem is found.

Shedding large amounts of hair at one time in a puppy at any age between 4-8 months is going to be normal. There are estimates to when a pet should shed, but again you have to take into account that there is a bell curve with any estimate, so some dogs fall to the left or right of this. Dogs can also shed at multiple intervals, because the entire shedding process can be broken up into phases. You know you are dealing with an actual skin issue when you see patches of bald areas on the skin. As long as she doesn't have alopecia areas then this is considered to be a normal shedding process.
