Why is my Shiba Inu shedding so much and looking thin this spring?

He is probably just shedding his undercoat which happens a couple times a year, especially if he otherwise seems normal with no itching and scratching. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, this is a very normal thing for Huskies to do! This is called "blowing their coat", and it can take up to 6 weeks for them to shed their undercoat. As I'm sure you are aware, Huskies have a very thick coat of fur, and they typically shed this undercoat as the weather gets warmer to help them better regulate their temperature. It can seem like a huge amount of fur, but it is normal. As long as Bowie is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking, urinating and defecating normally) and he is not getting any bald spots, he is likely just blowing his coat. You may have to brush him fairly regularly during this time to facilitate this shedding. I hope this is helpful!

I'm wondering if Mugen is simply 'blowing his coat'. Basically the entire hair coat will shed out. Some dogs do this on a regular basis. Some only do it every once in a while. I would recommend to monitor him for any lesions on the skin, itching, bald patches and basically anything that looks like disease. Dogs will typically blow their coats for a couple weeks then it stops. If something seems questionable, head to the vet. Hope this helps!

If you think he is too think you need to feed him better quality food or feed him more (maybe feed three times a day). If he has not been wormed recently you should also worm him. If he keeps losing weight even after worming and feeding him more food then you should take him to a veterinarian for an exam and blood tests. It is normal for a dog to shed in spring. Keep brushing him to help remove dead hair and to massage his skin with the brush. This will keep his fur in good condition.

All dogs start their seasonal shed at different times. If the hair and skin underneath looks normal then I am less worried. However, if there are bald spots, crusting, red skin, or itchiness then Woody should be seen by your veterinarian. With his breed I imagine he has some major thick fur to shed at this time of year. I don't know of any medical condition that would be cause for your pet NOT shedding during the spring and fall. If I were you I would feel lucky that your pet isn't having noticeable large amounts of shed hair. The hair is shedding but it is likely so slow that it is going unnoticed. However, there is no reason to be concerned at all. Just continue to give Hazel a high quality dog food daily and watch for any signs of skin problems which include: alopecia, bumps on skin, severe itching, licking or chewing. I hope this helps!
