Why is my puppy shaking head with smelly skin patches? Ear infection?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 30 days old

Hi, my pup is 6 month old tomorrow and for the last two days has been shaking his head quite frequently. I figured it was an ear infection and have been cleaning it regularly and have put a cone on him. As of today I found two orange-red pussy patches in his fur, one by the side of his face and the other under his chin. These areas smell horrid! What could this be?

Oh no, poor Piper! You are correct that he could have an ear infection, and if he was scratching at his ear, that could cause the infected (the pus, color, and smell indicate infection) areas on his face. I would have him seen by a vet first thing tomorrow morning. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or ear mites, and the vet can diagnose if he does have one, the cause, and can prescribe treatment for it. As for the infected areas, the vet can clean those and prescribe him antibiotics.
