My puppy shakes head, yelps, has dark ear wax. Is it an infection?

I recommend that you have Bear evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Unfortunately the picture you provided is quite blurry and it is difficult to see the inside of the ear. For a definitive diagnosis, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Coco so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The veterinarian can examine the ear using an otoscope and obtain any waxy debris for analysis if needed in order to help determine what treatment is best for Coco. These are classic clinical signs of an external ear infection, or otitis externa. I recommend bringing Brigg to your veterinarian at their next available appointment for an exam. Your veterinarian can perform an ear smear of any debris in the ears, and look at this under a microscope. Most ear infections are either bacterial and/or yeast infections, treated with topical medications. I hope this is helpful!

Poor pup! That does look quite suspicious for an ear infection, since normal ears should be very clean with no obvious wax or debris in the ear canal. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked out. Your veterinarian can examine a sample of the debris under the microscope to determine what kind of infection is present (yeast, bacteria, etc.), and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat it depending on what is found.

It sounds like Gypsy may have an ear infection. This is a very common condition in dogs and is treated with special ear cleaners and medication for bacteria or yeast, depending on what type of organism is causing the infection. I'd recommend taking Gypsy in to the vet right away (although an emergency clinic is unnecessary) for evaluation and to get treatment started. Best of luck!

Hello. I am so sorry that Buddy is having problems with his ears. Shaking & the discharge are all indications of an ear infection from bacteria or yeast organisms, inflammation from allergies ( food or inhalant ), or ear mites. Your veterinarian can look in the ears & obtain samples to examine under the microscope. Depending on what is seen will dictate treatment to clear up the problem quickly. This presentation could be due to an ear infections. Three sections of the ear can be infected, the external portion (otitis externa), the middle portion (otitis media) and the inner portion (otitis interna). Otitis externa is the most common ear infection in dogs. In this case it seems an external ear infection but an otoscopic examination will determine the exactly the extension of it. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
