My dog is shaking his head and restless. Does he need a vet sooner?

I would recommend having Dexter examined by a veterinarian to get a good ear exam in order to determine if anything is stuck in the ear canal or if there is an infection that needs to be treated. I would not advise trying to stick anything into the ear at home or trying to remove anything yourself as you could potentially damage the ear drum. Tomorrow for an appointment should be fine as what you are describing is not an emergency. When you see the vet tomorrow Pookie will be taken care of and will receive the most appropriate treatment. Hello. Achillies may have a ear infection, ear mites, or a foreign body like a grass awn in his ear. Do try to have him seen tomorrow by your veterinarian to diagnose what the problem might be. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

It's not an immediate emergency but it is definitely very uncomfortable and painful, if you have the option to take him today to the out of hours vet i would recommend doing that, otherwise take him to your vet first thing tomorrow morning.

I agree, it sounds like Voodoo is having a problem with her ears, and I suspect an ear infection. The problem with waiting a few weeks is that this is going to get worse, and if she keeps shaking her head, she will develop an aural hematoma which means more treatment. I would get her into a vet this week. Best of luck.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
