Dog limping, shaking, breathing differently after sedated nail trim?

It is very difficult to tell from these photos, it is possible that your dog's toe nail became slightly torn/detached from the underlying nail bed and you are seeing the separation here. We can, however, occasionally see nail bed tumors. I would recommend a visit with your vet to better examine the area. If it is a loose toenail they may need to trim it back to make it more comfortable until it grows back in normally. This can be very tough to do at home because often these guys are painful so trimming the nail back can be really difficult without skilled help!

Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

Without seeing his paw, I can't say for sure if they cut too far into his claw, but that could be a possibility. It could also be he hurt himself getting on and off the table. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. In addition, I would check his claws to see if any do look abnormally short. If you see a lot of blood coming from one, the area around the claw is hot, warm to the touch, swollen, or you see pus, then he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Ouch, poor Dexter! You're right, accidents do happen (and I've quicked many nails myself). Since Dexter seems resistant to walking on the affected foot, I recommend calling his vet. The vet may be able to prescribe a pain medication (typically a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as carprofen) for the next day or two. Unfortunately, there are no safe and effective over the counter pain medication options. Be sure to keep him from licking at the quicked nail, as this could exacerbate the issue. It sounds like it is infected. You could soak his paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. He should also be examined by a vet as he will probably need an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory to help treat the problem.

Restrict activity for the next 24 hours. Monitor for lethargy, swelling, bruising or increasing lameness. If the lameness persists beyond 24 hours, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. X-rays may be indicated after the exam.
