Why does my dog whine when I touch her back or hips? Is she in pain?

IF he is whining this is an indication he is in pain but there are many possible injuries, infections or accidents which could cause it. A full check up and possibly xrays is recommended if it persists beyond 12hours and your vet can prescribe appropriate pain relief and treatment once the cause has been identified. Keep him well rested and on a deep, soft bed in the meantime

Since she’s such a large dog, odds are good that she’s starting to show signs of arthritis, despite having excellent familial hip screenings. Arthritis can occur with age and can affect any joint. The hips, knees, elbows, and vertebral column are all commonly affected areas. Joint supplements including glucosamine and chondroitin can help slow the progression of arthritis and prescription anti-inflammatory pain medications can help to manage pain. At this point, your best option is to take Asta to her vet for an exam. Your vet will be able to determine if/where arthritis is present and will then prescribe any necessary medications. It sounds as she suffered a trauma, either to her back or her hips, you will need to take her to the vet as soon as you can in order to get it checked, if it is nothing too serious she will need some rest and pain killers for a few days.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. I am not sure how old your pet is but if there are no external punctures or rashes to be found, then it is possible that his bones are the source of pain. Arthritis is the number one reason for pain in the lower back and hip area. Also the armpit area is the shoulder, which is another source of arthritic pain. If he is a younger dog than some inflammation of the bone is possible (i.e. Hypertrophic Osteopathy or Hypertrophic Osetodystrophy, Degenerative joint disease). All of these conditions are diagnosed with a radiograph that your vet can perform in the hospital. If your pet is older you can try some joint supplements to see if this makes a difference. My top brands are Dasuquin and Cosequin.

At 15 years old she could definitely have a medical issue going on. I suspect she may have some arthritis in her spine and hips/back legs which is why she is seeming sensitive on her back and limping on the hind limbs. I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam and to get some medication to help with the arthritis (if that is what is going on).
