My dog has seizures; why did vet ask about yelping and scratching?

I think your vet may have asked that to see if Oscar was showing signs of Chiari malformation and syringomyelia - this is a syndrome where the brain and spinal cord form abnormally and can cause pain, neurologic symptoms and seizures. It is common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. An MRI would be the way to diagnose this disease, but there might not be much else to do treatment wise if Oscar does have the disease. If the blood work came back normal and Manolo is back to normal, you need to monitor him at home for now. You should avoid excitement, excessive exercises, stress, loud noise, sharp light. If Manolo has another episode like this, your vet will likely prescribe anti-epileptic medication for him.

If you feel that Dexter may have had a seizure last night, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian at their next available appointment. There are many causes of seizures including low blood sugar, liver disease such as a shunt, kidney disease, and disease within the cranium or cerebrospinal fluid. Your veterinarian can perform an exam on Dexter and best localize the problem. He/she may recommend bloodwork to help understand what may have happened to Dexter. I hope this is helpful!

Any time a known epileptic starts seizing again, especially with any frequency, it's time for a vet visit asap. Likely they will do bloodwork to make sure nothing has changed since you were prescribed medications last. You did not mention any phenobarbital or potassium bromide for long term relief from seizures? Is your dog on any any antiseizure medications or just the Valium as needed? If he is not on medications currently they may very well start him on something for long term relief. If he already is-they will likely adjust the dosages. I hope this helps!

I would need to ask a bunch more questions and would be happy to do a consultation if you’d like but let me give you a few ideas. 1) be sure it’s not heart- Fainting spells can look a lot like seizures. Consider a cardiology consult to make sure it’s not that. They’ll do an EKG and ultrasound of the heart to make sure nothing is amiss. 2) weird fungal diseases- I’m from Arizona, land of valley fever - a fungal disease that can - and often does- cause seizures. Other fungi like Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis can do similar things. If Bella has traveled out of Texas- even for just a day or two- these are considerations. 3) Bella is simply an atypical epileptic and needs more/different medication. Just like in people, it can sometimes take some time to find the right combination of drugs to get the seizures controlled. 4) weird drug interactions- double check especially about any anti-anxiety or behavior modification medications and pain medications. 5) hypothyroidism, tick fever, other weird stuff. If you’ve done an MRI, you may have already consulted with a neurologist. If not? That would be the next step along with the cardiologist visit. Best of luck to you and Bella!

The bleeding from the mouth could be due to trauma inside the mouth from either the seizures causing him to bite himself in his mouth or from falling off of the couch. Because he is having more frequent seizures, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may need to be on an anti-seizure medication. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. That sounds like Jb had a seizure. I would recommend taking him in. I like to do blood work including checking thyroid levels. I’m looking for treatable things. He also needs a thorough neurological exam to see if there are any deficits. I don’t usually place on anti-seizure medication for one seizure. I do recommend keeping a seizure log- keeping track of what they were doing, how long it lasted.. etc I have been using Royal Veterinary College App for my personal dog.
