My dog is having seizures and bleeding after an attack, what to do?

If you feel that Dexter may have had a seizure last night, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian at their next available appointment. There are many causes of seizures including low blood sugar, liver disease such as a shunt, kidney disease, and disease within the cranium or cerebrospinal fluid. Your veterinarian can perform an exam on Dexter and best localize the problem. He/she may recommend bloodwork to help understand what may have happened to Dexter. I hope this is helpful!

I would need to ask a bunch more questions and would be happy to do a consultation if you’d like but let me give you a few ideas. 1) be sure it’s not heart- Fainting spells can look a lot like seizures. Consider a cardiology consult to make sure it’s not that. They’ll do an EKG and ultrasound of the heart to make sure nothing is amiss. 2) weird fungal diseases- I’m from Arizona, land of valley fever - a fungal disease that can - and often does- cause seizures. Other fungi like Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis can do similar things. If Bella has traveled out of Texas- even for just a day or two- these are considerations. 3) Bella is simply an atypical epileptic and needs more/different medication. Just like in people, it can sometimes take some time to find the right combination of drugs to get the seizures controlled. 4) weird drug interactions- double check especially about any anti-anxiety or behavior modification medications and pain medications. 5) hypothyroidism, tick fever, other weird stuff. If you’ve done an MRI, you may have already consulted with a neurologist. If not? That would be the next step along with the cardiologist visit. Best of luck to you and Bella!

It is possible that the bite wound may be deeper than it appears, it may need stitches, or it may need antibiotics to prevent it from becoming infected. I would have it seen by your regular veterinarian, have them assess the severity, and determine if further treatment is necessary. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have Ice evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. You could consider an emergency veterinarian that is open at this time. If there are no emergency veterinarians open in your area, make sure to take him as soon as they are. This is not something that can really be managed at home. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. Based on your description, I would recommend having x-rays taken for the raspy breathing and if these episodes continue to occur, consider placing Jordan on anti-seizure medications to see if that helps. I'm so sorry to hear that. Bloody urine can have a number of different causes. It can be due to a problem in the urinary tract-- such as a severe urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a bladder tumor. Those things may also cause her to urinate frequently in small amounts and/or strain to urinate (but not necessarily). It could also be a problem higher up in her urinary tract--in her ureters (tube from kidney to bladder) or in her kidneys-- again an infection, stone or tumor. The other potential cause of seeing blood in the urine is if she isn't able to form a blood clot properly. If her blood platelets or clotting factors are low or are not working correctly, bleeding can occur within the bladder (or anywhere in the body--bruising under the skin, bleeding around the gums, blood in the stool, bloody nose, blood in the eyes). We can also sometimes see the urine look bloody when its actually a different thing causing the pigment (color). For instance, if she's destroying her red blood cells and the pigment (color) from the red blood cells which is the hemoglobin is ending up in her urine. Also myoglobin (which occurs with massive muscle damage) can result in dark reddish brown urine. Some types of toxic ingestions can also result in reddish brown urine. The seizure on Sunday makes me more concerned that something very serious is going on with her. If she's unable to clot her blood properly she could have a bleed in her brain. Or the seizures may be completely unrelated to the urine. I wish I could offer you a suggestion to treat her at home, but it sounds like you need to have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can.

Vomiting and bloody stools can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. If he is having seizures that make this very serious as this is possibly unrelated and could be seen with conditions such as low blood sugar from vomiting, brain inflammation, epilepsy, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics and possibly an MRI. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration.
