Why does my dog have seizures, raspy breathing, and jaw chattering?

It is hard to say exactly without seeing a video of the spells that are concerning; however, it seems that seizures are a possibility here. I would highly recommend recording one of these episodes on your phone and showing them to your veterinarian for verification of what exactly these are. If they are seizures, then this is considered an uncontrolled condition if they are happening more than once every 30 days, and Charlie would need to start taking anti-seizure medication to help stabilize his condition and help prevent any permanent brain damage. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jordan! I seriously hope Jordan doesn't have Rabies. If rabies is a concern humans should not be touching his saliva or be in a position where they could be bitten. It sounds like Jordan may have trigeminal neuritis (inflamed nerve). The cause is unknown but I have seen it after vaccination. The most effective treatment is supportive care. Jordan will need assistance with eating and drinking. If you are able to provide sufficient care at home, he may be treated as an outpatient, but if you cannot care for him, it will need supportive nutritional care in the veterinary hospital so that it is receiving adequate nutrients. If Jordan is still able to lap and swallow food that is offered, you can use a large syringe that is placed in the corner of the mouth to feed him water and pureed foods, with Jordan's head slightly elevated so that it can swallow easily. This disease usually spontaneously resolves after 2-4 weeks. I hope this helps and I wish Jordan a speedy recovery!

It may be a focal motor seizure. Is he otherwise acting normally? What blood test was done? A consultation may be helpful to be able to trade information back and forth and give you more insight. She could have a number of things going on including heart disease, underlying lung problems, heartworm disease or even an upper respiratory infection. Her jaw may be painful if she has underlying dental disease, a thorough oral exam is best. I can understand how worrying this can be; however the next best step here towards figuring out what is causing this is it have her examined by your vet and potential diagnostic testing done if she continue with this behavior. I would also recommend recording the time when she is having a hard time breathing so that the vet can better classify what is going on here. There isn't much you can do for her at home with breathing problems, so a vet visit is the next best step towards getting her properly diagnosed and treated. If you feel that Dexter may have had a seizure last night, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian at their next available appointment. There are many causes of seizures including low blood sugar, liver disease such as a shunt, kidney disease, and disease within the cranium or cerebrospinal fluid. Your veterinarian can perform an exam on Dexter and best localize the problem. He/she may recommend bloodwork to help understand what may have happened to Dexter. I hope this is helpful!

Other signs of seizures would be strange behavior before the seizure, the seizure itself can include shaking or tending of all the muscles, Bailey may urinate or defecate during as well. I recommend keeping a close eye on her and trying to film this if it happens again to show your vet. They can determine the cause of the seizure with blood work and more advanced imaging such as a CT scan. If seizure activity is confirmed, Bailey will likely be placed on anti-seizure medication. The bleeding from the mouth could be due to trauma inside the mouth from either the seizures causing him to bite himself in his mouth or from falling off of the couch. Because he is having more frequent seizures, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
