My dog has seizures, jaundice, dark urine. What poison is it again?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry for the loss of your dog Nancy! I see the blood work you attached. Her liver values (AST and ALT) and her kidney values were elevated (BUN and creat). I agree that a toxin is most likely the cause in a dog Nancy's age, even if she didn't contact the toxin the day the seizures started. Another possibility is something infectious, like Leptospirosis though they usually do not seizure. I have seen increased liver enzymes secondary to seizure activity (from the elevated body temperature and muscle activity). Again I am sorry for your loss!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Xander! I am so sorry Xander is so ill from ingesting a toxic toad. There is no antidote for these toads. Once they ingest the toxin it is just supportive care until the toxin is out of the system. In some cases the toads are deadly. I suggest Xander be hospitalized if he is not improving and it has been 8 days. He should be in IV fluids and his seizures need to be controlled with medications. The toxin can cause electrolyte abnormalities that can cause heart arrhythmias and they can be in a lot of pain. I hope this helps and I wish Xander the very best!

I'm so sorry Katana is so sick! Unfortunately there is nothing you can do at home to help Katana so she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Sometimes low blood sugar can cause seizures so you can put honey on Katana's gums, but you do need take her to see a veterinarian immediately. Many things including toxin exposure can cause seizures and can be life threatening so again, it is very important to have Katana examined by a veterinarian. Red coloured urine can be caused by blood like you say or by a pigment called myoglobin entering the urine. Myoglobin is not normally found in urine but when there is massive muscle damage it can be. Seizure activity stresses the muscles so I suspect what you are witnessing is actually myoglobin in the urine from muscle breakdown. It is posdible he has a bad infection in the urinary tract or has damaged it causing bleeding. If he is coming out of the seizures ok and seems well enough otherwise you may be able to wait until Monday. But if they get bad and he isnt coming out of it/ having one after another you will need to find an emergency vet. Best of luck.

Pokey sounds very ill and needs immediate veterinary treatment. This could be from poison or more likely an infection, metabolic problem or cancer. She definitely needs IV fluids to prevent dehydration which can become life threatening. In general with most poisons they would die quickly. Since this has been going on for a few days there is a good chance with proper treatment she could recover quickly. When the liver suffers an insult (such as a toxicity) it can take some time for it to regenerate/repair and all values to return to normal. This process can take months. Typical supportive medications given to dogs with liver injury include Denamarin, Vitamin E, Acetylcysteine, and Ursodiol. A prescription hepatic diet (such as Hill's L/D or Royal Canin Hepatic) may also aid in decreasing any ongoing liver injury. Ursodiol is an oral medication, available by prescription only, that can add in reducing bilirubin by stimulating bile flow from the gallbladder through the biliary tree. It cannot be used if there is underlying gallbladder disorder, such as a gallbladder mucocele (gallstone). Your veterinarian will prescribe this if they feel this will benefit Tasha's recovery. You can certainly schedule a recheck with Tasha's veterinarian to discuss any additional medications or treatment options that may benefit her. The liver is a highly regenerative organ, and if given the proper support can make a complete or near-complete recovery.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Bloody urine can have a number of different causes. It can be due to a problem in the urinary tract-- such as a severe urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a bladder tumor. Those things may also cause her to urinate frequently in small amounts and/or strain to urinate (but not necessarily). It could also be a problem higher up in her urinary tract--in her ureters (tube from kidney to bladder) or in her kidneys-- again an infection, stone or tumor. The other potential cause of seeing blood in the urine is if she isn't able to form a blood clot properly. If her blood platelets or clotting factors are low or are not working correctly, bleeding can occur within the bladder (or anywhere in the body--bruising under the skin, bleeding around the gums, blood in the stool, bloody nose, blood in the eyes). We can also sometimes see the urine look bloody when its actually a different thing causing the pigment (color). For instance, if she's destroying her red blood cells and the pigment (color) from the red blood cells which is the hemoglobin is ending up in her urine. Also myoglobin (which occurs with massive muscle damage) can result in dark reddish brown urine. Some types of toxic ingestions can also result in reddish brown urine. The seizure on Sunday makes me more concerned that something very serious is going on with her. If she's unable to clot her blood properly she could have a bleed in her brain. Or the seizures may be completely unrelated to the urine. I wish I could offer you a suggestion to treat her at home, but it sounds like you need to have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can.
