What to do if my dog ate a poisonous toad and is having seizures?

I'm sorry to hear about Pochay! I'm not familiar with the specific frogs in your area, but in my area frog ingestion usually causes mild GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea) and can sometimes cause neurological symptoms such as transient seizures. In both cases, we offer supportive care so it would be helpful to know what signs of illness you're seeing in Pochay that make you concerned she's been poisoned. If you're seeing mild GI upset, you can offer her bland food (white rice with cooked chicken breast) in small amounts until her symptoms subside, and encourage lots of fluids by adding extra water to her rice/chicken. Fluids will help flush irritating toxins from her body. If you're seeing neurological symptoms, she should be seen by a vet, to provide fluid support until she's feeling normal enough to eat

If the toad was toxic, you’d see symptoms such as head shaking, severe drooling, and pawing at the mouth and eyes almost immediately. Because it’s been 10 minutes since Max picked up the toad, I would suspect it’s not poisonous. I would not rush him into the ER vet, but keep an eye on him to be safe. Toads in my area of the US can cause similar symptoms, but they do not generally progress to vomiting of blood. I would take Maui to a GP vet or an emergency vet for evaluation. Blood work with a CBC, chemistry, and blood clotting times are a good start at determining what symptoms are affected and what treatments are indicated. There may not be an antidote, but supportive care, treatments, and close monitoring are the next best thing.

Some toads are toxic to dogs and usually what you will see is neurological signs (as you described). If she had been a smaller dog she may not have survived.... I don't know if you have these toxic species in Canada so you will have to do some research. Sometimes it can be bad, but it really depends. They can secrete a toxin that is irritating and sometimes toxic, but it depends on the species and how scared they are at that time (they secrete the toxin more when they are scared). You would know if he got any toxin, because they usually start drooling and constantly licking within a couple of minutes of getting the toxin. If you see this, then wash his mouth out with water using a hose for 5 minutes. The toxin can also make them hallucinate, so he may act a little off; but if he acts very lethargic or has tremors, then he should go to the vet immediately for monitoring and treatment. Peita should be just fine! Depending on the type of toad, they can have some toxins on their outer surface that taste awful so predators will spit them out if they try to eat them (which sounds exactly like what happened with Peita). Once the source (i.e. the toad) is removed so is the taste. So you do not need to worry!
