My dog's seizures are increasing. Why did the vet raise his meds?

However, seizures are unpredictable and this may have occurred even if you had administered the medication on his normal 12 hour schedule. Phenobarbital, potassium bromide and zonisamide are common choices. However, your veterinarian will know his medical history and which would be the best choice. So sorry about your dog. Your vet could try to increase the medications but it is possible that the anti-seizure medications will not control the seizure, especially if the brain cancer has progressed. I would definitely give it a try and see what happens and hopefully it will control the seizures and give him some more time.

I will also start meds if the seizures seem to becoming longer in duration, most intense or if the pet is having difficulty recovering from an episode. I hope this information helps!

Sometimes the anti-seizure medication needs to be increased to control the seizures, there is a chance they could get worse over time as you've seen. I think upping Mali's dosage is a good idea, and see how this helps her. If it doesn't, take her back into the vet.

12 seizures within 20 hours is a large number of seizures. Also the length of the seizures at 5 to 9 minutes is extreme. This does certainly point to a serious problem in the brain and likely to a tumor. Make sure to take your dog to the vet on Monday to adjust the dosage/add other medications. If the seizures last longer than 5 minutes , use the diazepam your vet gave you and if the seizure does not stop with the diazepam, you need to take Murray to an out of hours vet or ER right away.

Any time a known epileptic starts seizing again, especially with any frequency, it's time for a vet visit asap. Likely they will do bloodwork to make sure nothing has changed since you were prescribed medications last. You did not mention any phenobarbital or potassium bromide for long term relief from seizures? Is your dog on any any antiseizure medications or just the Valium as needed? If he is not on medications currently they may very well start him on something for long term relief. If he already is-they will likely adjust the dosages. I hope this helps!
