My dog has seizures after amikacin ear drops for ear infection. Why?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 33 lbs

11-year-old beagle with a staph infection of the ear. Taking amikacin. The first night of taking the medication she had four seizures and has never had one before. A week into the medication she had over 50 seizures in a 12 hour period. The amikacin is administered as drops into the right ear. The doctor said this would not cause this. I asked on here as well, and a vet replied saying it would not cause this. Why then does it match EXACTLY the side effects of that drug? ALLERGIC REACTION?

I am sorry that Scarlet is having seizures. When dogs have chronic ear infections they can become very difficult to treat and we are resorted to using strong antibiotics like Amikacin. However Amikacin injections can cause issues with kidney function and has to be monitored closely. I have used Amikacin for ear infection and applied topically I have never seen a patient have seizures. With an 11 year old dog I would recommend full blood work, x-rays and possible a CT/MRI to rule out disease in the brain or vestibular region that might be causing the seizures. IT is possible the ear infection is secondary to something going on more severe. I hope scarlet makes a speedy recovery
