My dog had a seizure but is acting normal now. What are my next steps?

Yes it could have been from a seizure or a bad dream. As long as Lola is normal now I would monitor her to see if this happens again. Dogs who have seizures more than once monthly or who have severe seizures should be put on anti seizure medication to prevent brain damage. Since you are not sure if this was a seizure I would write it on your calendar so if you see this again you know how long between episodes to share with your veterinarian. I do like to check blood work and do an exam before putting dogs on medication. Hopefully Lola just had a bad dream and this won't recur. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Button! Yes, as long as Button seems back to normal and doesn't have anymore seizures you can wait until tomorrow. Having 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period is an emergency or if he keeps going in to seizures with out a period of rest. Causes of seizures in a 4 year old dog are: Idiopathic epilepsy, toxin, infectious, metabolic and rarely cancer. I wish Button the best!

Other signs of seizures would be strange behavior before the seizure, the seizure itself can include shaking or tending of all the muscles, Bailey may urinate or defecate during as well. I recommend keeping a close eye on her and trying to film this if it happens again to show your vet. They can determine the cause of the seizure with blood work and more advanced imaging such as a CT scan. If seizure activity is confirmed, Bailey will likely be placed on anti-seizure medication. That sounds like Jb had a seizure. I would recommend taking him in. I like to do blood work including checking thyroid levels. I’m looking for treatable things. He also needs a thorough neurological exam to see if there are any deficits. I don’t usually place on anti-seizure medication for one seizure. I do recommend keeping a seizure log- keeping track of what they were doing, how long it lasted.. etc I have been using Royal Veterinary College App for my personal dog. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a seizure. I would recommend video taping an episode and showing your Vet. Causes of seizures depend on age. In dogs 1-5 epilepsy is the most common cause. In puppies: toxins, infectious or congenital problems and older than 6 years of age we worry about organ failures and brain tumors. One to 2 episodes a month may warrant starting medications. I would recommend full blood work with urine, thyroid testing if older than 6 and tick testing. If you suspect that Daisy had a seizure, I would try and get her examined by a veterinarian sooner rather than later. It is possible that this was not a seizure and was purely a sneezing fit. If Daisy appears to be normal now after the incident, I would monitor her for now and then take her in if the sneezing / seizure like activity recurs. If she continues to have seizure like episodes, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Daisy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If the blood work came back normal and Manolo is back to normal, you need to monitor him at home for now. You should avoid excitement, excessive exercises, stress, loud noise, sharp light. If Manolo has another episode like this, your vet will likely prescribe anti-epileptic medication for him.
