My rescue puppy is scratching and has yellow skin. What's the cause?

Poor Tyson may have some other kind of infection, like bacterial, fungal, or a mange mite infestation. Or, he could have allergic skin disease making him so itchy. To find out, he needs a veterinary exam and perhaps a skin scraping to diagnose what his problem is and how to fix him.

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you flea Java regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. It could also be a mite infestation which can be detected by your vet taking a small sample from the skin. If the fleas or mites are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids or anti histamines in order to stop the allergy.

The area on the side of his face looks like it has a bacterial infection causing the raised bumps. Your puppy should see your veterinarian to determine if this is the case. They may also want to do a skin scraping to look for any skin mites that may have started the problem. It looks like your pup will need prescription antibiotics to resolve this problem.

A vet’s visit would be best to determine whether the yellow scab are from dermatitis/pyoderma which is a fairly common skin infection. A Medicated shampoo such as Malaseb (available on PetCo.com, chewy.com, 1800Petmeds) that contains chlorhexidine and ketoconazole that is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-seborrheal (will help remove greasy flakes) used to shampoo the belly 2-3 times a week for 2-3 weeks, leaving the suds on 5-10 min prior to rinsing for optimal efficacy may be helpful. (Towel dry but never use a hair dryer on a puppy to avoid burns.) An in person physical exam would still be advisable as other skin conditions such as ringworm can possibly present as yellow flakes and would likely require more than Malaseb shampoo to treat. It is possibele he has a contact irritation from soemthing he is sleeping on, or possibly the wipes or he may have mites (inside the skin, not visible), a bacterial or fungal infection. I recommend a full vet check as soon as possible in order to identify and treat the source of his discomfort

If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Thank you for posting the pictures. It is possible that it is allergies, but he is a little young for that. I would be suspicious of mites it a skin infection.
