My dog is scratching, has red skin, and a sore. Is it infected?

Those could be fly larva living under the skin. Abscesses or wounds that are infected are also possible. I recommend to have Noah examined to be safe. From the pictures, the skin appears red and inflamed. It does look like it is infected. While this may not be a true emergency, I would recommend getting in to see your veterinarian very soon. Pookie will need the area shaved and cleaned up. Your vet may prescribe an antibiotic for this as well depending. Until you can get to your vet, you can keep the area clean and dry and use a mild soap and water to clean the wound. If Pookie is licking it, you can put on ECollar on her to prevent licking.

It looks as if your dog has a skin infection. These are usually caused by allergies and/or fleas. Their skin becomes itchy and the more your dog scratched and chews at the skin the more infected it will become. You will need to treat the infection (usually with antibiotics) and treat the itch. Common medications to help with itch include Cytopoint, Apoquel and steroids. I am not familiar with the medication albomine so I can’t help you with that. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria -hot spot-). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid scratching. It could have started as an allergy but as for now it looks infected, you will need to take Luna to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, she will need a course of antibiotics and possibly some meds to stop the itchiness as well.

Ouch, poor Jed! Yes, you are correct that scratching and digging at this little scrape has probably made it much worse, and it looks like it is infected from your pictures. At this point in time, he needs to see a vet for it so it can be treated. He may need antibiotics if any infection is present, which can only be prescribed by a vet.
