Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Oatmeal shampoo can provide some temporary relief so it can be used. Oh no, poor Toby! Unfortunately, there are no pain medications you can give him as many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can him him an oatmeal bath or an Epsom salt bath. Either may be temporarily soothing to Toby.

It sounds like Toby may be suffering from some allergies. Dogs can be allergic to grass, pollen, trees, fleas and more. Make sure you have him on a good flea prevention like nextgard, comfortis, or frontline plus. The best thing you can do while waiting to get to a vet would be to stop the chewing by putting on a cone collar and you can give him 25mg Benadryl (1 adult tablet) twice a day to help. Also, you can put neosporin and/or Benadryl spray on the scabs. But if he doesn't stop chewing/licking they will not get better. And he may need something stronger than Benadryl like a steroid which can be prescribed by your vet. Your vet may also prescribe some antibiotics if he isn't improving.

I would check to see if Fluffy has any fleas or ticks in her fur that could be contributing to her behavior. I would also see if she has any sores or lesions. If she does, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian, as she may need antibiotics if her skin is infected. In the meantime, I would bathe her in a gentle dishwasher soap (such as Dawn), ensure you remove all soap from her fur while rinsing her, and gently dry her to see if that helps. Good luck!

If you haven't yet had him seen by a vet, ideally I would recommend that you have him evaluated. He may have a secondary bacterial infection that needs to be cleared up with antibiotics, and he may benefit from prescription medications such as Apoquel which can make a big difference for these guys! Hi. Poor Twitch. Sounds like some pretty bad allergies. Also, check and make.sure there aren't any fleas or ticks. The only options at home would be to try antihistamines. You can contact your veterinarian for a possible dose for those. Otherwise Twitch would need to be seen to get the best treatment and diagnostics.
