My dog scraped her nose. How to stop her licking off the medicine?

If you notice this, try taking away his food for 8 hours, and then start offering small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. If Snowy becomes lethargic or disinterested in food, I would recommend taking him to the vet in case he needs further medical attention. In the future, when applying the cream, try to keep Snowy occupied with toys and play for about 10 minutes before letting him lick his skin. This is a difficult place to put anything on, because it will just be licked off. From what I'm seeing in the picture, it is a very minor abrasion, so I would not be to worried about it getting any worse. For now, it's best to just keep the wound clean by wiping it with warm water occasionally. This should be completely healed within the next two weeks.

Lesions in this location can be a little tricky to treat with topical medications because most dogs are able to lick them off, at least to some degree. You can try to clean this area with an antiseptic chlorhexidine cleanser twice a day (Hibiclens is one brand), but take care to rinse it well and do not let Bella lick it while you are cleaning. Breaking open a vitamin E capsule and rubbing it on this area may be mildly helpful, but it won't hurt if she licks a little off. As Jessica mentioned, one of the most important things to do is to keep an e-collar on Bella to prevent her from rubbing at this area further. If this lesion persists for another week or worsens at any point, you'll need to take her to a vet for evaluation. Sounds like Misty is feeling pretty rough! Just under the nose is a hard place to stop licking, as you can't use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to stop her from doing so. You may need to try to distract misty with a chew toy instead that she can put her energy into to help prevent her from licking the spot. if it is very raw and sore, you may also want to have your vet take a look to make sure there isn't an infection or other irritation that should be treated. Your vet may also be able to recommend a no-lick spray or bandage that may be suitable around the nose, as well. Avoid putting any home remedies on the spot, as it may just increase irritation which will increase licking and stop the area from healing.

Some possibilities are hyperkaratosis, an immune condition or even an infection. Treatment of all of these things are different. Some over the counter options are Snout smoother for hyperkaratosis or vitamin E or an a and D ointment or a mild immune issue. If her nose worsens or doesn't improve she should be seen by your vet. You could try using a small amount of Vaseline or Bag Balm on this area to help with the dryness - some dogs will try to rub off any topical medications that might be applied, unfortunately, so I can't say if he will leave these alone or not. Normally, using only a small amount is best, so that it doesn't feel sticky and strange to the dog :)
