My dog is scooting, licking her bum, and smells bad. Is it impaction?

It is a little difficult to say exactly what is going on with Daisy - she may have a recital prolapse (a condition where some of the tissue in the rectum actually comes out) or chronic irritation if she is scooting on carpeted areas. Scooting may be related to anal gland impactions, infections, or intestinal parasites. I recommend having Daisy seen by a vet as soon as possible because she is likely uncomfortable and the conditions above require treatment. I hope all is well!

Hello, sorry to hear about Bear. It sounds like his anal glands are impacted and need to be expressed. This can be a major concern if the anal gland becomes infected and leads to an abscess. You may need to take him to a veterinarian sooner if he develops any pus like discharge or pain around his anus. I would recommend having him evaluated sooner if possible as he may continue to leave the foul odor around your house and also be uncomfortable with his anal gland impaction. Your dog may have infected or impacted anal glands. This certainly would explain the discomfort and foul smell. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible to have them checked to make sure that is indeed what is going on, expressed and maybe put on antibiotics to help him heal faster.

Hello, sorry to hear about Tinkerbell. She may actually have impacted anal glands. These are glands around her anus that produce a foul smell and some dogs, particularly small breed dogs, may be unable to express thes glands on their own. Often, they require digital expression of these glands. If they become too full, they may bother your pet or even become infected. I would recommend having Tinkerbell evaluated by her veterinarian soon or even your local groomer to have her anal glands expressed. If you look under her tail around her anus an notice any evidence of bleeding or pus like discahrge, then have her seen by a veterinarian sooner as she may have had developed an infection. It is likely that your dog possibly has an anal sac impaction or abscess. The licking will actually make it worse. You shoulld take her to a veterinarian where the anal sacs can get inspected and expressed or flushed if necessary. You can help your dog in the future by feeding a teaspoon to table spoon full of canned pumpkin daily in her food which will faclitate eliminating feces.

I think Max might have a problem with his anal glands, two scent glands located to the sides of the anus that can get impacted and turn into proper abscesses ( localised infection ). I would recommend that you have him checked over as it can be quite uncomfortable ! He will need some antibiotics and pain relief .

Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.
