My puppy is scooting, licking, lethargic, and smells. Is it serious?

Hello, sorry to hear about Daisy. One thing is that she could have impacted anal glands that could be leading to an abscess. Second is that she could have perineal fistulas, an autoimmune disease that could cause the foul smell. I would recommend having her evaluated so that she can have her anal glands and perineum evaluated to treat any underlying infection. Hope this helps and best of luck.

See if there is fur and poop matted there and see if the skin is red and inflammed. If there is matted fur wash him. If he isn't matted or the skin is red I recommend he see your Vet today. They can address the skin and check to see if his anal glands need to be emptied. Full or impacted anal glands can cause scooting. Causesof diarrhea in puppies: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity or toxin ingestion. Bring a stool sample to your appointment. After the exam they may prescribe an antibiotic and/or a probiotic. If his skin is irriated they may prescribe a topical to apply. I hope this helps. Chronic anal gland problems can be highly unpleasant to manage. Have you discussed surgical removal of the anal glands with Bear's vet? From your description, it sounds as though he may be a good candidate for this procedure. If surgery is not an option for one reason or another, euthanasia may be an option if Bear's quality of life is declining. I can understand your heartbreak over this situation, but I strongly recommend discussing all options with your veterinarian before making any final decisions.

Either something in his hind end is hurting him very badly, or your dog is showing signs of small seizures. I would video this behaviour and take the video with you to your vet ( bring thee dog also for an exam). Your vet will examine Bear, his anal sacs (they may be impacted or inflamed) and his hip and hind legs. depending on the findings he will empty his anal sacs or prescribe pain medicine for joint pain or other medication necessary to make your dog healthy again.

Your dog may have infected or impacted anal glands. This certainly would explain the discomfort and foul smell. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible to have them checked to make sure that is indeed what is going on, expressed and maybe put on antibiotics to help him heal faster.

Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

Poor Buddy! This is a common behavior when they have full anal glands. Anal glands are 2 glands, one on each side of the anus, that holds a foul smelling material. They are there to help naturally lubricate a dog's bowel movements, but not all dogs properly express them. I would take him to your vet clinic and see if they can express his anal glands. Also, he could also act this way and lick everything if he is really itchy, anxious or just uncomfortable. If he doesn't improve after his anal glands are expressed, then I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he doesn't have an infection or something else going on causing these behaviors.
