My dog has scabs on her nose and bumps on her forehead. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 53 lbs

We noticed some scabs on our dog’s nose. She also has bumps on her forehead. Any idea?

Scabs like that can be a few things. Sometimes it’s a one time infection. Sometimes it’s related to allergies and sometimes it can be related to hypothyroidism. Your fastest option is to have her examined by the veterinarian. Lesions on the nose may not heal very well with topical medication because pets lick it off. Often they are prescribed systemic medications since they travel in the bloodstream.

Those scabs look like a staph bacterial skin infection.

It is recommended you take her to your vet for an exam and to get some antibiotics. It is hard to treat that area topically because it is so close to her eyes. Most topical medications to treat this condition cannot get in the eyes. She needs oral antibiotics.

If this was anywhere else on her body I was give you some ideas on how to treat it at home but not with where her lesions are located.

These could be from a wound or from a skin infection. I would watch them closely. You can put a little neosporin on them as long as they aren't close to the eyes. If they are getting worse or not improving I would have your vet look st them. She may need some antibiotics or other meds to help clear them up.

A lesion like that could be several things including an ingrown hair, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or a skin tumor/mass. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day (not her whole body, just the lesion). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog has a scab-like spot on her snout with no injury. What is it?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This area can be either a localized demodex infection, a bacterial infection or a fungal infection (ringworm has to be considered). Thyroid disease can also be considered. If the area of hairloss and scabbing does not improve or completely resolve within 1-2 weeks, then I would recommend taking Indy to your local vet to have the skin tested. If it does not improve, then the appropriate medication (depeding on her skin test results) can be prescribed for Indy to help this resolve. Bset of luck with Indy and her skin. Take care.

There are many reasons for scabs on the nose. It can be related to an injury or autoimmune condition. It can also be related to a disease process within the nose. A physical exam is the only way to know what the cause is. Sometimes these pups even need a biopsy. I recommend to have Lucek seen by his veterinarian. My dog has black bumps on his nose. What are these new bumps?

A couple of things come to mind as possibilities. This could be an acute hypersensitivity reaction to something - bug bite/sting, perhaps - or possibility a severe bacterial infection called furunculosis. There are also some immune-mediated/auto-immune diseases that attack the top of the nose. See your vet about this. An appropriate treatment plan might be to start antibiotics and if no improvement after 2 weeks consider a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

What's this red, scabby, pus-filled bump on my dog's nose or lip?

From the picture it actually looks more like a deep skin infection to me. This could be bacterial or fungal, or even a hypersensitivity reaction (less likely). I would recommend that she be examined by your veterinarian soon. They may look at a sample under the microscope to help determine what therapies might be most helpful.
