My dog's scabbed spot isn't healing. Is it ringworm or vet time?

Ringworm can take up to 3 months to go away. I think this article will explain more. The reason I ask is because it actually looks more like mange lesions to me. If you are not seeing much improvement after another 7-10 days and your vet did not actually test for ringworm, then I suggest you have her back to your vet to talk about actually testing for ringworm and testing for mange to get this figured out. From the pictures, it doesn't look like a typical ringworm lesion but I can't rule it out without seeing August in person. It could be a skin infection or from an injury. It should be checked out by a vet, but it's not an emergency. If you can get her into a vet this weekend great, but it's fine to wait until Monday. I'd leave the spot alone for now and don't put anything on it since you do not know what is causing it. I hope this helps!

I am suspicious that this could be a lesion caused by either demodex mite or ringworm. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian. A skin scrape can be done to look for mites, they may consider a trial anti mite therapy in addition to an a topical anti fungal medication. This could be more than one thing- ringworm, fungal infection, parasites, bacterial infection, allergies- if the wound does not seem to get better in the next couple weeks you should take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

The anti-fungal medications can sometimes take several days to a week or so to see a dramatic improvement so if Ruckas just started the treatment, I would give it a good week. After another week and you still do not see any improvement, you may revisit with Ruckas's veterinarian to discuss other causes such as a bacterial infection or perhaps due to a seasonal allergy or food allergy as a cause for the skin lesions. There appears to be some good hair regrowth, but it could be infectious still. I've seen lesions that appear completely normal and still test positive for ringworm, so it is best to take her to the vet for testing. The test takes a few days, but is relatively inexpensive and is the best method we have for determining when to stop treatment. I hope that helps and all Juju recovers soon.

What you are describing sounds like scar tissue, but I would have to see it to be sure. Scars will not grow hair, but tend to get smaller and less visible with time. Puppies will heal better than adult dogs, so the scar should be much less obvious within a couple of months. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to encourage hair growth in this area if it is a scar. It's also possible that the lump is due to a deep infection. If the lump grows, appears red, or starts to ooze fluid, then it's best to take her to the vet for an exam. I hope that helps and all is well with your pup.
