My pet has sarcoptic mange. How do I treat it safely and effectively?

Mange can be difficult to treat, in many cases it takes several weeks until it resolves. there are several treatments for mange, these are the best and easiest options: Bravecto tablet, Advocate spot on and Revolution spot on.

Hi there! Scabies is generally fairly easy to treat. Your veterinarian should prescribe a medication such as Bravecto or ivermectin, which will clear it up without any problems. I'm not aware of any over-the-counter remedies that are effective, so this is best left to your veterinarian to treat :)

Demodicosis and scabies are caused by 2 different mites, Demodex and Sarcpotes, respectively. The only way to diagnose and differentiate between these mites is by a veterinarian performing a skin scraping. This technique essentially scrapes away the top few layers of skin cells and bit of blood just under the outermost cells so that the sample can be examined microscopically. The mites are diagnosed during this microscopic exam and can easily be distinguished. There are two different prescription based medications for each mite, but must be given under close veterinary supervision. After some research I have found that you can buy Ivermectin. It is very EASY to overdose so please be careful dosing your dog. It is dosed by weight. Follow the label instructions carefully and repeat every 14 days until one month after all the mange is gone. It is strongly recommended that you work with your vet on using this product. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think your Vet is referring to Bravecto. Bravecto is an oral flea and tick medication that is given every 3 months. They have found that an extra benefit is that it can fight mange. I am not sure which type of mange your dog has; sarcoptic or demodectic mange. I have heard it is better for demodex. I have used Nexgard a once a month flea and tick medication for demodex. Hope this helps!

Prescription monthly Nexgard flea and tick preventative also kills mange and is approved for a 4 month old dog (monthly Simparica and Bravecto every 12 weeks also work off label to kill mange but are labeled for dogs 6 months and older). She can be just on monthly Nexgard without the ivermectin therapy but both are safe as well. I recommend inquiring with your vet about monthly Nexgard for Winter and seeing if she may have underlying allergies as well which can predispose dogs to getting mange. Prescription Apoquel pills or monthly Cytopoint allergy injections Injections are both very effective in treating itchiness from environmental allergies (typically characterized by paw licking, scratching, chronic anal gland issues, chronic ear infections). I'm very sorry Pretty Girl has sarcoptic mange! Unfortunately the only way to cure it is with medication from the vet. That's the only safe and proven effective treatment. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford the vet, and I can give you some resources that may help. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants.
