Can Sam-e help my dog diagnosed with liver and spleen tumors?

SAM-e is a good liver supplement but will not fix or improve a potential liver shunt. A bile acids test is used to confirm if a shunt is present and a CT helps to locate the shunt before surgery. Medical management if surgery is not an option due to the shunt location/type/ etc is also an option you can discuss with your veterinarian. Surgery if possible is the best option for a long normal life. Medical management can decrease their normal life span depending on the degree of the shunt. Good luck!

While in theory anti-inflammatory medications can help to reduce the blood vessels feeding the tumor, this is only when combined with a chemotherapeutic agent such as cyclophosphamide given in a metronomic fashion. However, we have not found this to result in a better outcome in patients with metastasis (spread of the tumor). While those herbs are unlikely to be harmful, they unlikely to help. You can always however try the herbs and focus on her quality of life at this time. Acute hepatic intoxication is the main suspicion, considering the signs you reported. Poor amber,, that liver is massively enlarged and I would expect breathing difficulties, inability to eat and abdominal pain. Although scans and biopsies may provide information on the underlying cause, euthanasia may be the kindest option at this stage

I strongly recommend you discuss this case with a veterinary oncologist (cancer specialist) as soon as possible in order to explore all potential options for treatment. A liver support supplement such as hills l/d or royal canin hepatic food plus zentonil may help support the remaining liver to function as well as possible in the meantime.
