Senior dog with enlarged liver and tumors: when is euthanasia best?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 12 years old | 51 lbs

Jello. I have a 12 yr old dog. She has a high fever, dehydration, not eating, etc. She lost over 5 lbs in a short while. Our vet took xrays and said her liver is very enlarged, packed with tumors and pressing on her stomach and lungs. Im attaching the xrays and would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you

Poor amber,, that liver is massively enlarged and I would expect breathing difficulties, inability to eat and abdominal pain. Although scans and biopsies may provide information on the underlying cause, euthanasia may be the kindest option at this stage
