My dog has high liver enzymes. Is SAM-e good for a liver shunt?

This is not the same but is fine for your dog. The licorice root is a natural anti inflammatory herbal remedy and it also inhibits liver injury so it's a good choice for animals with high liver enzymes. You may still want to give the milk thistle if you can find it separately. You have done an excellent job maintaining Kandy throughout her life with a liver shunt. Well, the concern with starting Sam E in her situation is that we don’t know what type of tumor is on her liver. If it is a hepatocullular carcinoma (true liver cancer and not metastasis) then in theory it could “feed” the cancer. However, if your veterinarian feels that this is a different type of cancer then yes, Sam E would be appropriate. A 10 kg dog typically gets around 225 mg of Sam E per day. However, that being said, most commercial dog food diets have sufficient amounts of both and most dogs do not need supplementation. If your veterinarian thinks this will help, I would look at ordering the following product, which can be found online quite easily. Liver support medications such as Hepagen C as well as a low protein, low fat diet such as Purina NF, Hills L/D diet, or Royal Canin Hepatic Support diet can help as well. These diets are formulated especially for dogs that have liver problems such as liver shunts, and they make it easier for the liver to metabolize nutrients that are provided to the body. Pako will have a decreased live span without surgical treatment of this disease. He may live a few years without many problems, but the disease can become refractory, and the neurological signs may worsen over time. I hope this helps! That can help with the diagnosis of a liver shunt. Yes, dogs can live a relatively normal life if the symptoms of the liver shunt can be managed with diet, antibiotics and laxatives. There is really very little sense in speculating. Even a positive bile acid test will not definitively diagnose a portosystemic shunt. Only advanced imaging techniques can capture this condition. Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme that is sometime utilized to support diagnoses of the liver and bile duct system. However, alone the number doesn't tell us much particularly in a young and from what it sounds like otherwise healthy puppy. The elevation you mentioned is also very mild, and we frequently see elevations in this enzyme in young growing animals. Just as it is found in the liver, it is also found in the bones which is why it is elevated during the time that pups are getting larger. I obviously don't know the whole situation and there is always the possibility your dog could have a shunt. However, so far you have given me no reason to suspect a serious problem. I'm sorry to hear that! It really depends on the severity of the shunt and what kinds of symptoms she's showing, so this would be a good question to discuss with your veterinarian - but in general, surgery is strongly recommended for dogs with liver shunts who are having neurologic symptoms. Medication and diet are usually not sufficient to control their symptoms without surgery.
