My dog is sick after neuter, saw a worm. Is it safe to deworm?

Yes the medications (anesthetics and antibiotics if used) can cause digestive upsets fater surgery. Bland, small low fat meals fed little and often and a probioitc such as fortiflora can help. If he is weak and unwell you should have him checled by your vet to rule out a fever or infection of the wound

If he vomited 5 days after the deworming the vomiting is not likely to be related to the deworming. It sounds as Smokey t is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Poor pup! If he's vomiting, not eating, and isn't able to keep anything down, this is very concerning - so I would recommend taking him back in to your veterinarian today to be seen. It's possible that this could be some type of complication related to his neuter surgery, or could be a totally separate problem. Your veterinarian can examine him and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

I would not deworm him when he is not feeling well unless you have a specific diagnosis that he needs the dewormer (example: a fecal test was run and you know he has roundworms). I would wait until he is feeling better.

It's not advised to give him deworming when he is vomiting, because it will likely just be vomited up. Worms can get in the stomach (not their usual place) and cause vomiting, but they don't tend to cause them to suddenly get weak. It's possible that some other infection (like parvo virus) is happening and the appearance of the worm was just a coincidence. Puppies that vomit a great deal can quickly become dehydrated, which will cause them to get weak. In order to keep Chopper from having life-threatening complications, it's best to take him to the vet for an evaluation and treatment as soon as possible. For now, only feed small amounts of bland food and make sure he has plenty of clean water. You can add rehydration salts to the water to help treat the dehydration. If your dog is sick three hours after giving the worming treatment, this should be sufficient time for the worming treatment to be absorbed. To err on the side of caution, if your dog is known to be infested with worms, it might be a good idea to re-treat him in a week's time with a different product. I'm not sure which product you are currently using, but I recommend using Drontal. You can get a Drontal tablet from your vet. If that doesn't make him sick, you can use it as your regular worming treatment.

It is possible that if your dog had a severe round worm problem, all the dead worms now are causing the intestine to try and get rid of them as fast as possible. This is achieved by diarrhea. I would wait for another day to see whether it goes away by itself. If not, then I suggest you withhold food for about 12 hrs and then feed some bland food (boiled rice and boneless chicken) for a day and then slowly transition back to his normal food. If that does not clear it up, it is time for a vet visit.
