My dog ate grapes, vet treated. Normal now. Is he safe from toxicity?

How naughty of Hector to get into some grapes! It is extremely encouraging that his kidney values (particularly the creatinine and BUN) are within a normal range. The SDMA value is thought to be of use in detecting early signs of chronic kidney disease, but is not of much value when concerns about acute kidney disease arise (as in the case of grape ingestion). Remember that there is a wide range of normal to account for individual variation and values at the higher end of this normal range do not typically indicate a problem. I can see that Hector's ALT (a liver value) is mildly elevated, but in all honesty, I do not worry about elevations in this value until they are about twice the upper limits of normal (>240, whereas Hector's value is 181). That said, it is still worth asking your vet if it is possible simply to recheck this value in another week or two. It will most likely return to normal, but if it remains high or increases further, ongoing monitoring of the ALT and further diagnostic testing (bile acid testing, abdominal ultrasound, etc.) may be indicated. I hope this helps to clear up any confusion and that Hector continues to do well after eating grapes!

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

Oh no, poor Rosie! Grapes are highly toxic to dogs and can cause acute kidney failure, leading to signs of lethargy, vomiting and inappetence. Rosie needs to go to an ER vet immediately, as this could be a life-threatening emergency. The vet will be able to examine her, determine her kidney values on lab testing (CBC, chemistry, urinalysis), and start her on IV fluid therapy with other supportive medications. Good luck!

It would be hard to tell as every dog will react differently to the ingestion of grape/raisins and chocolate, and it toxicity can also depend on how quickly/slowly any of it was digested. Some dogs may be able to better handle a higher dosage, while others may react strongly to a smaller amount. It's best that you have the bloodwork scheduled, as that will give you the best picture of what is going on for Iggy specifically. I'd also recommend a follow-up blood panel in a month or two, as some dogs have shown delayed responses to ingestion of toxic foods before. Signs to watch out for of something being wrong include lethargy, vomiting, a painful or hunched abdomen, drinking/urinating more, and just general malaise. These are all signs that you should seek more immediate treatment if needed.

I'm so glad you took Peanut to the emergency clinic right away and that they were able to make him vomit up the grape. The concern for the next few hours is that since they gave him medication to vomit the grape, some dogs will continue to be nauseated (despite anti-nausea medication) and will vomit again if fed or allowed too much water. So, that is the concern for the next few hours. If there is a possibility that Peanut ate any additional grapes, I would recommend having blood checked in 3 days to make sure his kidney values are normal. Otherwise, as long as Peanut returns to his normal appetite and energy level without any vomiting, there aren't any special instructions for grape ingestion that was immediately vomited. Hi, I dont’ think the vomiting and diarrhoea is related to the grape ingestion. It could be that she has also eaten something else ! I would recommend to have her checked over 48 hours post ingestion to check her blood, to make sure that everything is fine. Hope this helps !

Every dog is different and 1 grape could be toxic to one dog and it could take 100 grapes to cause toxicity to the next. I recommend calling your vet for options to decontaminate Poppy.
