My dog is sad and not eating after puppy died in birth canal.

If Ladi recently had puppies and isn't eating or drinking, I would be concerned that she either has a puppy stuck (dystocia) or that she needs fluids, or may have low calcium. I recommend taking her to her veterinarian to be evaluated. Sometimes they just need a calcium supplement, but she may also need x-rays to make sure all of the puppies are out. Also, anytime a dog is pregnant and lactating, it is recommended to feed them puppy food due to the higher nutritional values. If she isn't on this, I recommend switching her.

Poor Butters! From your description, I would be very concerned that she may still have another puppy inside her, or may have a severe uterine infection or some other problem. Having a stillborn puppy is a sign that something went very wrong during the birthing process, and it's not normal for her to seem painful and not want to eat or drink. Unfortunately, I'm afraid there is really nothing at all you can do at home to help her - this may be a life-threatening problem, and she needs immediate veterinary care. I would recommend taking her the nearest emergency clinic tonight to be seen, if possible. The veterinarian there can take x-rays to see if there is another puppy still inside her, and may need to do an emergency c-section if so.

Poor Lucy. She could be suffering from electrolyte imbalance after labor, an infection in her uterus or mammary glands, a puppy that she never delivered that is now infected or more. You could try to offer her some plain boiled chicken (no bones) and white rice or canned dog food to see if you can entice her to eat. If she won’t eat, I would strongly recommend to have a vet look at her. Your vet will be able to run blood work and even X-rays if needed. They will be able to recommend to best treatment plan for her and get her started on the proper meds (even appetite stimulants) to help her feel better. I hope this helps.

I am so sorry to hear that Lilo lost all her puppies due to premature birth. Her appertite will take a few days to get back to normal. You should just continue to offer her the canned food and if she still doesn't seem to be recovering well, ask your vet for a prescription for a recovery diet such as Hill's A/D or Hill's Recovery.. I would also keep an eye on her rectal temperature to make sure she is not feverish, which can also cause a pet to feel quite sluggish and have a decreased appetite. Her post-op instructions should have been to keep her from running, jumping, and rough playing for the next 10 days until she has fully healed. You should also keep the incisoin dry and check it daily for any openings or drainage, which warrants a rechk with your vet if seen. If she has external sutures, you should be going back to the vet around that time to have the sutures removed. Typically after a major surgery like a c-section, the pet will have a bit of ileus (slow moving gut), which can delay pooping for 24-72 hours. As long as she isn't straining to go defecate, then its fine to continue monitoring her until she attempts to go. Plus her decrease in the amount of food she is eating is likely why she hasn't formed a good stool just yet. I don’t think she is depressed. I think she is probably sick. I worry about a uterine infection called a pyometra. It is a pus filled uterus. It doesn’t happen often just after pregnancy, but it can. If this is her problem it is life threatening without surgery. I would encourage you to take her to your local humane society or city shelter as often they will provide low cost or even free spay and neuter. It is normal for them to clean and eat the placentas but she should have an appetite and be feeling fine. She may need to be checked to see if there are any retained membranes or a uterine infection which can make her feel bad. You can try to give her boiled chicken and rice to help her stool and her appetite. If she seems too weak you may to bottle feed the puppies to let her rest since nursing burns alot of calories.

It isn't unusual for a dead puppy to be born long after a healthy litter is born. It is likely that the puppy was stuck in the birth canal and took longer to deliver and died while being stuck, or it could have been dead in utero and was later expelled with the last placenta. Usually there is no problem with the mother provided she eats, drinks and takes care of her puppies. If she gets lethargic, or if she has smelly discharge from the vulva (greenish non-smelly discharge is normal) then she should be seen by a vet .
