My dogs run away off-leash from their kennel. How can I stop it?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 7 lbs

We have a huge fenced in dog kennel about 30 feet from our house and our dogs go in it to use the bathroom. But when we take them out without leashes they run away. We already tried electric collers. Building a fence to the kennel is not an option. How do we do this???

If your dogs are not off-leashed trained then I recommend not taking them off the leashes. You can hire a trainer to see if they can train your dogs to become off leash trained. They would be the best ones to help you. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Some dogs no matter how hard you work with them to have them go off leash, they just cannot be trusted off leash.

You can start with a short leash and treats in your pocket. Let him have some lead and then call him back and him Max a treat. Little by little letting him have more freedom and see if he comes back. If it is going to work it will take time. I never truly recommend having your dog completely off leash because if something catches their eyes, ears or nose they sometimes will not come back because they are so focused on something. I always caution people when trying to do this.

Otherwise, I would work with a trainer to help.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Toffee may not know his boundaries well, and assumes he can run everywhere once he's outside. I recommend training him on a leash to show him where his boundaries are. For example, walk him on a leash around the perimeter of your property, and never beyond. You can make him sit at the edge of your property, and give him a treat. Do this at multiple points around your property. Since he has run off before, he may not learn the true edge of his property. The safest thing to do is to take him out on a leash and not let him run freely. He is otherwise at risk of getting lost, or even hit by a vehicle. I hope this is helpful.

I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and her in person to really take care of this behavior. How can I entertain my dog on a leash at home before training?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would play with each dog individually, but not where the other dogs can see. Put the other dogs inside in separate rooms where they can't see you from the windows. Play fetch, take them for a run (if you run), walk on a leash in a park, bring pull toys outside. Play with each dog 30-45 mins per day individually. There is no easy answer due to your circumstances. I hope this helps in some way and I wish you all the best!

Dog training classes help teach you these skills, because it's all about you being consistent. My dog bolts out the door when it opens. How can I train him to stop?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This is a very common behavior in puppies. Leash correction will help correct the behavior. Keep a leash on him and when he attempts to bolt out the door, give the leash a firm tug and tell him a command such as "sit". Have many treats handy and give him a few treats when he listens and sits. If training is not going as planned, you can use an electric collar and whenever he goes near the door, you can apply a low voltage shock to deter the behavior. I hope this helps! My dog won't recall outside. When can she go off-leash safely?

Some dogs cannot go off leash outside. I would keep her on a leash until you can have the fence installed in the summer. Once the fence is installed you can work with her a lot easier to try to get her to listen to come back to you when called. My concern would be that she would run and get hit by a car, attacked by another animal or run after someone (even if she would never hurt them it can still scare someone). I would try to get a trainer to work with you now since she is so young. If you have a trainer and are consistent you may be able to have her off the leash one day.
