Dog had Rimadyl reaction, needs pain relief. What's aspirin washout?

Hello. Just like you & me, if there is no longer any significant pain it is best to stop the aspirin. If Katie needs long term pain management, there are other medications that are safer than aspirin. The problem with aspirin is how quickly it can effect the clotting mechanisms, so generally I like to limit its use to about 3 days at a time. Take with your vet about safer options & ancillary treatments such as Adequan injections & glucosamine supplements if her pain continues & is due to osteoarthritis. While a washout period is recommended between NSAIDs like Rimadyl and corticosteroids like prednisone the actual number of days to wait has not been determined by a research study. I typically recommend a 7 day washout but there are many times I have started prednisone right away when I thought it necessary. You could ask your vet about using gastroprotectant medications like antacids to help lessen the likelihood of side effects.

Hello there! The amount of aspirin you gave to Whitney is probably not enough to hurt her, however it is my general recommendation to avoid giving aspirin to dogs whenever possible. Aspirin is very hard on a dog's stomach, and can cause gastrointestinal distress and even ulcers or organ failure if given in too large of a dose, or over a long period of time. There are now lots of pain medications available that are made specifically for dogs that have less of an effect of their body, though they are only available through your vet or a veterinary pharmacy. If you have a relationship with a veterinarian, they may be willing to write you a prescription for a dog-safe pain medication if Whitney has been seen at the office recently. You may be required to go in for a visit if it has been a while, however, as there must be a recent client-veterinarian-patient relationship for the vet to dispense or prescribe these drugs safely. Legally, a pet must be physically examined by a vet before any treatment can be prescribed or recommended. Rimadyl can be used for any muscular or joint inflammation or pain, so it is probably the right choice for Westley. If you get in touch with your local vets, they should be able to advise about the dose for Westley. You will also find Rimadyl dosage on the leaflet, that should be provided with the tablets that were prescribed for Winston.

Poor Taffy! No, do not give Taffy that medication. NSAIDs can cause severe go irritation and even perforate the intestines. NSAIDs are given a 'wash out period' between dosing and it is generally 5 days between meds. Those signs are consistent with another illness and they are concerning for something more serious. Acting disoriented is not normal and is always worrisome. I recommend to try to find an emergency clinic near you and get her in today if possible. Otherwise, offer her a bland diet of boiled chicken and plain white rice. Massage her known arthritis areas and you can apply a warm heat (not too hot as they can get burned!!) to the areas. If you can't get her in today, get her in first thing tomorrow. That should help tp keep her more comfortable. I hope this is helpful and that Taffy starts feeling better quickly! Please do not give aspirin. Especially with an older dog it can cause a stomach upset and gastric ulcers. I recommend giving her a neck and shoulder massage, letting her rest and you can use heat on her neck to soothe the area. In a thirteen year old dog I wouldn’t give the Deramaxx without consulting your veterinarian. They may recommend checking her kidney and liver function again before starting any medication. I’ve found acupuncture is effective for pain relief, particularly with neck problems. If she gets worse then please take her in right away. There are no contraindications for giving Rimadly when a dog has had acepromazine, so it's fine to to give Denzel Washington. As long as the vet prescribed the Rimadyl for him to take for his chipped nail, you can give it to him :-)
