How long can I safely give my dog aspirin for pain relief and comfort?

No i do not recommend that, this is a risky medication to give to your dog, if the pain lasts for more than 3 days i recommend taking him to the vet to get that checked, all safe pain killer medications for dogs are prescription only.

Hello. We generally do not recommend aspirin because of the same problems seen in people. It can cause severe gastric upset & possibly ulcerations, & aspirin decreases platelet activity that can lead to prolonged & abnormal bleeding. Only use aspirin on the advice of your veterinarian, or consider one of the newer & safer anti-inflammatories available for dogs. Definitely continue your joint supplements, though. Hello there! The amount of aspirin you gave to Whitney is probably not enough to hurt her, however it is my general recommendation to avoid giving aspirin to dogs whenever possible. Aspirin is very hard on a dog's stomach, and can cause gastrointestinal distress and even ulcers or organ failure if given in too large of a dose, or over a long period of time. There are now lots of pain medications available that are made specifically for dogs that have less of an effect of their body, though they are only available through your vet or a veterinary pharmacy. If you have a relationship with a veterinarian, they may be willing to write you a prescription for a dog-safe pain medication if Whitney has been seen at the office recently. You may be required to go in for a visit if it has been a while, however, as there must be a recent client-veterinarian-patient relationship for the vet to dispense or prescribe these drugs safely. I'm sorry to hear that Boo's nail is so painful! A normal washout period after a long aspirin course is 7-10 days. I do not recommend using aspirin in dogs due to the risk of blood clot formation and risk of significant gastrointestinal ulceration. In cases where some form of pain medication is needed, I will sometimes try to shorten the washout period by also adding in antacids and other medications to protect the stomach and GI tract. Talk to your vet about the possibility of starting antacids and gastroprotectant medications to try to get Boo started on an NSAID (either Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Previcox or Galliprant) as soon as possible. In the meantime, tramadol should be able to help some with overall pain management. I hope that he's feeling better soon!

Dog aspirin is a bit safer than regular human aspirin. However, now that he is feeling better I wouldn't feel the need to continue to give him the medication. Its best to just continue monitoring him and he will likely be fine here moving forward, especially if there are not wounds or even abrasions on the skin to speak of. Sorry to hear about poor Kolby. I'm actually quite worried about him, because the lack of appetite and history of giving aspirin could indicate that something is very wrong. While aspirin can be safely given at certain doses, it is not a medication that is advised long-term and could cause him to get ulcers in his stomach or intestine. I don't completely understand the last sentence, but it appears there may be a concern with the vet. I hope that you can find a vet to look Kolby, because he could get much worse without professional treatment. For now, stop the aspirin and make sure he has plenty of water. The all meat diet will cause the gas, but if that's all he'll eat, then it's OK to feed a little throughout the day. I hope that helps and Kolby gets better soon.
