Dog won't rest after spay. What can I give her for pain and sleep?

Unfortunately, there are no human OTC medications that would be safe for a dog that underwent surgery so recently. I would recommend calling your vet to see if they can prescribe something, or have Josie evaluated by an emergency vet. You can try to use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes several times a day, and encourage walking around the house, but no running or jumping.

I'm sorry to hear Kona is not feeling well! This can be totally normal after surgery. Sometimes they have whats called 'Dysphoria' and they will be agitated and not able to settle. Basically they are still feeling weird from the anesthesia but they don't understand what's happening to them so they become anxious. I would advise to sit with her in a quiet location with soft music (classical and reggae music have both been shown to soothe dogs) and keep the environment stimulation free. While these herbs are generally safe, interactions can occur. Given that the sedation chemicals are still in her body, I would not advise to use this supplement. Its best to avoid interactions. Try to pet her and reassure her. By the morning she will likely be feeling better. If she is still anxious tomorrow, call the veterinarian for additional medications that can sedate or provide anxiety relief. I hope Kona settles down quickly and falls asleep. Best of luck!

Typically medications that provide sedation do not offer pain relief, but without knowing the name of the sedation, I cannot say for sure if the sedation medication also gives pain relief. I will say that Skyler will need the pain medication, as a spay is an abdominal surgery and will be painful for her. Huskies are very active dogs, so I would recommend getting her the sedation to help keep her quiet, and the pain medication for her pain.

I would call and ask for pain medications or for additional pain medications. She should be on an anti-inflammatory (rimadyl, previcox and deramax) at a minimum. They can add tramadol and/or gabapentin. If you are worried and are not happy with how she is acting then definitely take her somewhere to be evaluated. This could be a side effect of the morphine administered for sedation. Keep her in a quiet, warm, dimly lit room. Restrict activity as much as possible, especially avoiding stairs or climbing onto furniture. Effects can last 4 to 6 hours, not all dogs metabolize the drug at the same rate so this period could be longer or shorter. If she is the same or worse after the 4-6 hour period has passed, consider having her rechecked by your vet. Contact your veterinarian anyway and discuss options for pain management once the morphine wears off.

It sounds like Lucy is painful from the surgery, and if she was prescribed pain medication, I would make sure to give that to her as prescribed. Should she not have pain meds, I would call your vet now to speak to them about getting her some. Please do not give her any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

She will lay in the way that is most comfortable for her. Provide a clean, dry area for her to lay down. Make sure she has an e-collar (cone) in place to prevent licking. Monitor the site daily for excessive swelling, bruising, redness, discharge, bleeding and to make sure it is closed.
