My dog is anxious and won't settle after spay. Can I give calming aid?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 14 days old | 16 lbs

We just got Kona spayed this morning and brought her home tonight. She is obvously uncomfortable and is hating the ecoller but she is very very anxious and won’t settle down. Our vet said to call tomorrow if she seems anxious or can’t get comfy. We have a vitamin called Quiet Moments calming aid, I’ll send a pic of bottle. They’re chewable and I’m wondering if it’s save to give Kona after that surgery. she came home with Rimadyl 100mg to take tomorrow + 5 Days

I'm sorry to hear Kona is not feeling well! This can be totally normal after surgery. Sometimes they have whats called 'Dysphoria' and they will be agitated and not able to settle. Basically they are still feeling weird from the anesthesia but they don't understand what's happening to them so they become anxious. I would advise to sit with her in a quiet location with soft music (classical and reggae music have both been shown to soothe dogs) and keep the environment stimulation free.
While these herbs are generally safe, interactions can occur. Given that the sedation chemicals are still in her body, I would not advise to use this supplement. Its best to avoid interactions.
Try to pet her and reassure her. By the morning she will likely be feeling better. If she is still anxious tomorrow, call the veterinarian for additional medications that can sedate or provide anxiety relief.
I hope Kona settles down quickly and falls asleep. Best of luck!

Hello. It can take up to 24 hours for all the sedation to work through her system, so she is very likely still a bit under the influence. I would like for you to look at her gums, the tissue just above her canine teeth, to see if she looks nice & pink. If her color is pale, greyish or bluish, get her back to your vet immediately. You can certainly lay with her, & if she is just on a cold floor, I would try to get her on something warmer. The pain medication is just indicated for once a day, so you can not give her any more just yet, nor can you give any aspirin, Tylenol or Alleve. Your veterinarian may have something else on hand if it looks like she needs more, but most patients are feeling much, much better by the next day. My dog is shaky and crying after spay surgery. Should I be worried?

Hi there. Different individuals can respond to anesthesia differently, just like humans. In my experience, it's not uncommon for some pets to be wobbly, confused, or otherwise "out of it" for up to 24 hours or so after an anesthetic event. As long as she's responsive and doesn't seem to be getting worse, this is likely normal. If she's still shaky and crying by tomorrow morning, I would recommend giving your vet a call as she may be painful and need some additional medication to help with this. For tonight, you can sit and snuggle with her if she seems to want this, or leave her alone if she doesn't want to be touched. Make sure she has food and water available if she wants it. Monitor for any bleeding from the incision site, pale gums, or increased weakness or acting less responsive, as these could indicate a more serious problem that needs an ER visit.

Dog won't rest after spay. What can I give her for pain and sleep?

All sleeping meds are prescription only, this is something you will need to ask your vet to prescribe you. more importantly your vet should have discharged her with pain killers, you should give him a call and request pain killers for her.

Spaying a shy puppy: Will a new vet cause anxiety or setbacks?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Typically a combination of drugs is administered prior to the procedure. I typically like giving the pre-medication 15-20 minutes prior to the procedure. This should not set her back and once she is out of the unfamiliar vet clinic, she should be fine. You can ask the veterinarian to pre-medicate her prior to the procedure so that she is not so stressed out. It is not necessary to keep dogs that have been spayed overnight. All of my spay procedures go home that exact same day. If you feel she will be too stressed out while there, I would be more apt to have you keep Sie at home for the post-op recovery period. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Daisy! Is Daisy on pain medications. She sounds painful to me. I would call and ask for pain medications or for additional pain medications. She should be on an anti-inflammatory (rimadyl, previcox and deramax) at a minimum. They can add tramadol and/or gabapentin. If you are worried and are not happy with how she is acting then definitely take her somewhere to be evaluated. They can check her temperature, her gums and her pain level. I hope this helps and I wish Daisy the best!

Spayed puppy anxious about incision. How much calming aid to give?

If your puppy has an e-collar from the vet , you should leave it on her so that she does not lick her incision. If she cannot lick her incision, she will eventually stop trying. if the calming aid says to give 1 ml for every 10 lbs, it means that a dog which weighs 10lbs gets 1ml of the calming aid. A dog weighing 1 lbs gets 0.1 ml, 2lbs gets 0.2ml, 3lbs gets 0.3 ml, and so forth. Make sure this is indeed suitable for puppies. If your veterinarian gave you pain medications for Leia, you should give them to her as directed. Some calming aids should not be given with pain medication.

What you are describing is pretty normal side effects from the anesthesia. Dogs definitely feel pain after surgery! You should only give pain medication from your vet. OTC human pain medications are not recommended. If you did not receive any pain medication to give her, call your vet so they can dispense the proper medication for you to give. Other than that, keep her as calm and quiet as possible. Don't bother her too much. Just let her sleep. Keep her away from any other pets until she is fully healed from surgery (about 10-14 days).
