My dog regurgitates liquid & coughs after drinking. Should I worry?

These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the first part of the gastrointestinal system (oesophagus). regurgitation could be a sign of oesophageal pathologic enlargement. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Kubi is drinking too fast, he can choke a bit & bring up some phlegm. The ACV is a good idea, as the slight acidity might slow down the gulping. You can also add something to the water dish so it is just a bit more difficult for Kubi to take in too much too fast. An upturned secondary dish works well ( water dish should look like a bundt pan). If this continues, it would be a good idea to discuss things with your veterinarian. I do not think this is anything too serious, but Kubi may have some reflux going on that might respond well to medication. Take care.

Poor girl. She may have a condition that is causing this such as megaesophagus. I am not sure if your vet has ran any tests yet, but I would recommend starting with thoracic radiographs and perhaps even a barium series will need to be done to detect a possible megaesophagus. Form there the vet will prescribe medication if this conditon is confirmed. The main concern with a pet that regurgitates is aspiration pneumonia. This is why they suggest to elevate the food bowl to allow gravity to help keep the food down. However most owners have to make a gruel (water mixed with food and then puréed) and also give pro-motility drugs (i.e. Metoclopramide) in addition to help manage this condition. If she has a habit of eating anything laying on the floor, it could be she ate something causing this behavior. Because this has been going on for two nights, it's time to see the vet. A cough associated with drinking can be a sign of dysfunction of the nerves that affect the larynx and the vocal cords. There are many other potential causes of a cough ranging from bronchitis to heart disease. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian for a physical exam. X-rays might be recommended as a first step.

It sounds like Suttu is regurgitating. In a young puppy this could be due to a hereditary disease or a congenital defect. Either way, Suttu needs to be examined by your veterinarian right away. Depending on what is causing the regurgitation he may be able to be medically managed or surgery may be indicated.
