My dog has reflux and nausea after pancreatitis. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Roxy! It is possible she is having a flare up of pancreatitis, but she is 9 years old so we need to be mindful of other things as well. She could be painful in her neck or back or have a different metabolic condition (liver, kidney problem or diabetes). I think starting the omerprazole as prescribed by your Vet is fine. For my patients with pancreatitis I do a low fat diet for life. If she is not eating and still acting abnormal when your Vet opens I would have her seen. Pancreatitis makes them nauseous and is painful. I treat with pain medications, antibiotics and antinausea medications. The omeprazole is just an antacid and will not help much for the nausea and pain. I hope this helps and I wish Roxy a speedy recovery!

Poor Quinton. He has been through alot. I would recommend that he have chest and abdominal xrays. If he is getting aspiration pneumonia and now vomiting, I am wondering if he has megaesophagus or some other issue with his esophagus or stomach. He needs labs and xrays

He should stay in the hospital as long as possible on IV fluids/medications. Sometimes it takes a week or longer before they start getting better. Was an abdominal ultrasound done? That would be a good idea. He should be held off food until he is better. At the hospital the vet can feed him nutritionally through the IV catheter with something called TPN. He should be given food orally. This would be my suggestions. Pancreatitis cannot really be treated at home.

YEs, fewer signs fo nausea/discomfort and less burping wpuld be an indication that the treatment is working. Ensuring he eats slowly by using a slow feeder or scattering his food over a wide tray or plate so he has to work harder for it can also be helpful in improving overall digestion.

Poor Quinton! Pancreatitis can become a chronic issue. Switching the diet to the Low Fat food may help. You will also need to make sure he does not eat ANY human food or get into the garbage. Any treats need to be extremely low fat. Some dogs with chronic pancreatitis benefit from daily antioxidants for dogs. Some may need a daily steroid but most don't. Make sure Quinton drinks lots of water daily. Make sure you are feeding him a low fat diet. If his appetite is still not great ask your vet for antacids and antinausea medications. Pancreatitis can also be painful. Besides supportive care Chester likely just needs time. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

You will need to take your dog back to the vet for a recheck. The veterinarian should prescribe pain medicine for your dog. If he has not had an ultrasound exam yet, this may be the time to have one, in order to check out whether he has an abscess or tumor on his pancreas. By now he should not be in pain anymore, especially since his body functions have returned to normal (no vomiting, no diarrhea, and eating and drinking.).
