How to reduce excessive shedding & dander in my Chihuahua mix?

Unfortunately, there is not an effective way to decrease the amount of shedding from a dog, nor would it be recommended. Dogs shed their coat as part of the normal hair growth lifecycle. As I'm sure you are aware, Malinois have a very thick coat, and especially as the weather gets warmer, they shed much of their undercoat to better help them with thermoregulation. If they were unable to do this, they would be much more likely to overheat, which is very dangerous. I would not recommend giving him any excessive amount of oils or bathing him frequently, as this could result in gastrointestinal upset and/or damage to the skin, which may actually cause him to shed more. Daily brushing will help him shed this undercoat, which may take up to 6 weeks. I hope this is helpful!

It is normal for dogs, even short haired breeds to shed. If you think that something is going on with Bogo, for example, if he has lower energy levels, a change in appetite, or is scratching, she should be seen by a vet to determine if there is an underlying cause to blame. You can try brushing Bogo regularly, or bathing him with dog shampoo and using a dog conditioner - there are several different products available that will allow the hair that would normally be shed on your furniture to come out in the bath. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If he is itchy at all then it could be due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Wow, what a cute dog! If you brush him daily to remove the dead fur and vacuum often there should be less shedding and fur in the house. You may also want to keep him off the furniture and have him spend time outside so there is less fur around. Also wiping him down daily with a damp cloth will reduce the dander which contributes to the allergic reactions.
