Why is my short-haired dog shedding so much? How to reduce it?

Shedding fur, even seemingly large amounts, is completely normal for most dogs. If your dog has never shed like this in the past, or if she is losing so much fur she is having bald patches, then I would be concerned. Poor hair growth and cost condition can be due to poor nutrition/diet or an underlying medical condition like hypothyroidism. If you feel like the amount Soska is shedding is abnormal I would recommend a visit to your veterinarian to have her examined and possibly to have blood work performed. In the meantime you can supplement her diet with some fish oil (specifically omega 3 fatty acids) and see if that helps her coat. I hope this helps. Excessive shedding can have a multitude of reasons: It could be seasonal shedding as we are now in full-blown autumn and Sam may be shedding his coat and replacing it with a winter coat. He could also have a thyroid condition that is making him shed excessively. This can be diagnosed or ruled out easily via a blood test. Other reasons could be bad quality food, a lack of essential fatty acids, parasites or fungal/bacterial infections. Some dogs naturally shed more than others. If you think that the shedding is caused by something other than a seasonal change or fur I suggest you take Sam to your veterinarian for an exam. I am afraid there are no pills or vitamins to prevent excessive shedding. Brushing and feeding a good brand complete dog food for small dogs is the best treatment. Regular grooming (shaving) also will hep.

Hair shedding is a normal process in dogs when the hair follicle turnover happens. THis can increase due to environemnt or hormones. To help pick up some of the shedded hair I woudl suggest purchasing a product called a Furminator brush, which can remove the shedded hair so that less of it collects on the floor. You can also give him over the counter dog fish oils from your local pet store to encourage a healthy haircoat. I would continue to bathe your pet with dog shampoo to routinely cleanse his skin. This sounds like normal shedding. I would not be worried unless there are bald spots where all the hair is missing. There is nothing available to stop shedding as it is a normal process. You don't want to stop it completely but you can give supplements to make the hair healthier and shiny. This supplement has vitamins for both the hair and ones to help his joints. I understand how excessive shedding can be difficult to manage! Different breeds inherently have differences in their hair coats and can experience different degrees of shedding. Springtime is generally the time of year where dogs shed the heaviest, as they are ridding themselves of the additional hair grown to stay warmer through the winter months. Other factors, such as stress or endocrine/metabolic diseases (such as hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease) can also cause excessive shedding. However, at 1 year old, Popcorn is quite young to have developed these conditions. Last spring, Popcorn likely would have still had his more downy puppy coat and would have been less prone to a heavy degree of shedding. To more effectively manage shedding around the house, try to bathe Popcorn every 1-2 weeks and brush him daily. Some shedding tools, such as shedding blades or Furminators, can be helpful to remove excess undercoat, but use caution with these tools as they can cause bald areas or skin irritation if used too vigorously! Hello, dogs are expected to shed their fur in excess at least 2 times per year. Other causes for excessive shedding include stress, inadequate diet, or diseases affecting the skin coat or hair growth. You may limit the amount of hair shed onto your environment by brushing Leo daily and ensuring his diet has is adequate (i.e he eats a balanced diet approved by AFFCO). Additionally, you can inquire about feeding Leo a diet with added essential fatty acids to promote skin health. If you feel that Leo is shedding excessively due to being stressed, anxious, or nervous you may talk to your veterinarian about medications to control his anxiety in addition to behavior modification training.
