My dog has a red, yellow bump near his crotch. Is it serious?

Hello. It looks like Chunk has a bit of dermatitis going on. It may have started out with a little irritation, & with time, a staph infection has become evident. It is always best to see your veterinarian about this, but in the meantime, you can mix a dab or 1% hydrocortisone cream with a dab of triple antibiotic & lightly coat the area twice a day. Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks like a bacterial infection of the skin. Around the penis is a common area to get skin infections due to the proximity to the ground. I would suggest bathing the area with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type shampoo. If Duke's skin does not improve within 1-2 days, I would bring him to the vet, as he may need something stronger such as oral antibiotics. In the meantime, you may need to put an e-collar (cone) on his head to prevent him from licking and further traumatizing the skin. I hope this helps, and that Duke feels better soon!

One spot of redness is nothing to be concerned about. It could be a simple bug bite or mild skin infection that should resolve on its own in a few days. As long as the redness does not spread, worsen or cause discomfort, then it should be fine to just monitor this area for now. If the redness spreads or worsens, then he should be physically examined by your veterinarian. I am sorry to hear about Tonka! It is hard to evaluate the bump based on this photo, as it is a little blurry and there is no way for us to know the size of what we are looking at. If the red area is large/very raised, like the size of a nickel or raised more than 1/4 cm then I would be more suspicious that we have a small tumor of the skin (we can have both benign and malignant skin tumors). If the area is smaller and not bothering him, you can try washing with a mild soap and applying a topical antibiotic like neosporin 2-3 times a day. If the lesions isn't resolving by the end of the week or if it is more mass-like as I described earlier, then a vet exam would be recommended.

Tucker likely has a localized infection or perhaps a skin tumor. The good news is that its most likely benign. Rarely, young dogs can get a malignant tumor called a mast cell tumor so I would recommend to have the area examined by a veterinarian to be sure. The doctor may recommend to take a small sample of cells to make sure its nothing to be concerned about.

That red area could be many things from a superficial skin infection to allergies. At home you can wash the lesion daily with soap and rinse well. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Prevent him from licking the lesion by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Make sure he does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. If it is not improved within 7 days or if it gets worse at any point, have him examined.
